Explosion in 15th/PPW subway stop this morning? — Brooklynian

Explosion in 15th/PPW subway stop this morning?

So, I was waiting for a train at the 15th Street/PPW F stop around 8:05am this morning close to the south end of the train when I heard a loud "boom." A few seconds later there was smoke everywhere and people scrambling towards me. I moved away like everyone else and kept an eye on it... a couple of people ran up the stairs (presumably to report it) and a few minutes later the train came, so I got on it with everyone else.

Does anyone know what the heck happened? No one seemed to be hurt or panicked. But it was really odd....

  • Wow, I was there 5 minutes earlier, just missed it. That IS odd.
  • I was hoping someone here saw it, for it was nutty and I still have no clue what it was!
  • I was there at about 8:20, 3 fire trucks and a handful of firemen in full gear walking along the platform, but no smoke and the manhattan bound train came without incident.
  • Had also just entered the station when the firemen arrived and started ambling about. The south end of the station seemed foggy, but I smelled nothing, so I imagined it was just haze from outside.

Train came and went normally, so... perhaps just a BBQ's rat?
  • Well, it would have had to have been a big rat. ;) The smoke was from floor to ceiling and pretty thick. It came rushing from the subway tunnel to about 1 1/2 car lengths into the subway station at the south end.

    Still a mystery!
