Nostrand Avenue near Eastern Parkway — Brooklynian

Nostrand Avenue near Eastern Parkway

Nostrand Ave. seems to have seen a mini-rejuvenation lately with a number of the storefronts putting up new awnings and the corner lots of Nostrand and Eastern Parkway all seeing renovation (with T-Mobile, Metro PCS and, allegedly from signs, a Dunkin Donuts).

I'm curious if this is just happenstance or a concerted effort? Or, perhaps one or two folks own all the property and are becoming more organized in their renting efforts?

Anyone have any inside info? =)

  • Its definitely a concerted effort by the owner of the property. He's been active in showing his spaces and in courting the types of businesses that he thinks will be sucessful in the community, but also provide some greater diversity to the offerings on Nostrand. I'm not sure if he owns the buildings on the east side of the street, but he definitely has the western corners at Nostrand and EP.

A couple of summers ago the local merchants association got some sort of funding which they used to put up new streetlights and awnings on the buildings between Park and Prospect. I don't know if other blocks have been successful getting funds for that type of investment as well.
  • I've noticed that the new awnings all seem to go up around the same time. Must be some funding program that makes that happen.
