My car was NOT stolen! — Brooklynian

My car was NOT stolen!

katbka
edited November -1 in Park Slope
My car, small red Volvo with Jersey plates, was parked in front of 10 PPSW, right by the Bartel Prichard Square. I parked it last night, and this morning it was gone. I called the police and tow-pounds, and it wasn't towed...

If you saw anything last night, or see a car similar to this one parked or left anywhere on the street, kindly let me know!

  • that sucks!

however, don't rely on the tow pound to have accurate information.....one of the posters here found out that their car WAS in the tow pound, but had been entered incorrectly.

you should take a trip down there, or see if you can get somebody from the pound on the phone
  • btw, did you have any outstanding parking tickets or reason why it could have been towed?
  • Thank you Flexchick, we did speak with the tow pound directly and no luck :(
And we don't have any outstanding tickets, not a single one. Sucks!
  • Hi-

    Keep trying the tow lot.

This is actually a common tactic - it happened to me when I first moved here. I think they target out of state plates.

Anyway, it was a hassle - two days of thinking my car was stolen, then I got a call saying they found my car and the tow lot had entered the plate number incorrectly so hence they couldn't find it right away.

The kicker? They tried to bill me for all three days it was in the lot.

Somehow, I got off with only paying for one day.

I've since learned that this is a common practice...

Sorry this happened to you - I know exactly how awful it is.
  • WE FOUND IT!!!!
After filing a police report, canceling car insurance and EZ-pass we decided to take our 6-week old son for a stroll. And, what do you know! 3 blocks from where we thought we parked it!

Sorry for the trouble, and thank you so very much for all your valuable advices.
  • hahahahaha.......I can laugh because I did this once about 20 years ago. Both my friend and I were convinced we parked it on one street and when it wasn't there, everybody immediately thought it was stolen.....I filed a report and then found it the next day. Like a fool, I drove it home (45 minutes away) and then called the station to say I found it. They made me drive back and show them my ID before canceling the report.

Glad you found it, and make sure you cancel the police report....you don't want to get pulled over and have them think you are driving a stolen car
  • I'm almost in the same boat as you, but at least I know ahead of time that I have no idea where I parked my car. Somewhere in Monday spot, I beleive...time to take a stroll up and down every block! Ugh.
  • I don't have a car, but this seems like a good use of camera phones. Take a pic of where you parked or the intersection sign at the end of the block. If you can remember to do that, that is.
  • My 16-year-old Honda with many dings was stolen a few years ago. When the police came, they drove me around the surrounding streets for at least a half-hour, presumably - I supposed - to jog my memory in case I'd forgotten where I parked it. It was a legitimate gambit, though I was absolutely certain where I'd parked it.
After about 3 days, the Police found it - run aground out near JFK and then towed to a local station. For the record, its negative vibes skeeved me out and I signed off on it right there.
While on this topic, it seems to me that From the Police Blotter in the Brooklyn Paper consistently has reports of several car thefts a week. Maybe I'm just not out late so often anymore, but I never see police cruising the streets. Lately there have been multiple reports of restaurant breakins too.
Do you see police patrolling the streets overnight?

i also repeatedly tell myself to make a voice memo / text memo
and to email them to myself , but never do.

not surprisingly , i lose my car once every few months.
  • glad to hear you found it!

ITA with Flexi, make sure to cancel the police report before you or your husband get arrested for driving a stolen vehicle!

So, what happened? Did you just forget where it was really parked or was the car moved for some reason (movie shot, etc). I try really hard to leave myself a voice memo if I park anywhere other than on my block. You wouldn't believe how many times my memory gets confused and I go walking to where i thought my car was and it isn't truly there only for me to remember later that that was the spot I had parked it at days ago, not recently.
  • I would say also to beware of posted signs of film or television shoots... Certain shoots are issued 'tow permits' by the city. If there are signs warning of a shoot and the crew finds cars parked where they're shooting, they tow cars and move them to the nearest legal space they can find.

If there was something shooting by Bartel Prichard Square, this is what would've happened. I know it sounds unbelievable and I know it sounds borderline illegal, but it happens regularly.

Here's an article about when it happened on the upper east side during the shooting of the movie "The Brave One"

  • And there it was, sitting on 16th St corner of 10th Ave
  • The same thing happened to me yesterday! I dragged my husband up and down 4 blocks before remembering where I left the car. He was cool about it, even in his suit. :-)

Yup! And we were like

    Thanks neighbor! :)
  • why do you have nj plates?
  • get your NY plates, you free loader
  • pencap75 wrote: get your NY plates, you free loader
That is part of the argument for residential parking permits.
  • yeh. it just seems a lot of people tend to be all 'brooklyn new york' 'i <3 brooklyn' about everything in their lives but cannot contribute by LEGALLY obtaining a ny state license and registration. instead, these people use some 'other' address to register a vehicle to save money on the fees associated with owning a car in ny state.

the below may not apply to the op but logic dictates that it might:

these are the same types of people who have their pay stubs sent to nj or somewhere to avoid paying nyc income taxes and then complain when tax dollars aren't being doled out the way they want. it's called being cheap and skirting the law.

how brooklyn ny of these people!
  • Yes, why do you have NJ plates when you obviously very much live in Brooklyn, NY?
