Subject: St. Joseph's Church

This is on Pacific St. between Underhill and Vanderbilt Avenues. I don't know anything about it other than that it's beautiful and that immigration services are offered there. Anyone else know anything?

  • It is absolutely gorgeous on the inside. It has all the original mosaic tiles and stained glass. I happen to think it is the second prettiest church in Brooklyn (the first being St. Agnes on Hoyt St.). The catholic, church-going population has dwindled some so it has fallen into some disrepair but not much. They hold masses every Sunday, the first is English, the second Spanish. The Spanish mass is usually much larger and they have a wonderful chorus (which my mother in law sings in). They have a winter hockey team for this kids (which is held in the basement) and in the summer time the kids play baseball in the field next to it. Their youth group is combined with St. Theresa's youth group and they hold trips, etc. I think the adults also run a bus group that goes to Atlantic City.

They used to have dances in the basement but Im not sure if they still do. I do know that they rent out the hall downstairs for parties and weddings.
  • Anyone know what's up with the chickens in the year?
  • Those chickens have become the church's pets. They showed up there one day and they haven't left. There used to be a rooster there but I believe that was "the Rooster of Dean St." that was caught not too long ago.

There were a couple of families in this neighborhood who used to keep chickens and roosters in their yards.
  • Is that legal? I have a big yard and I like eggs, and worst comes to worse I loooove chicken rings.

I'm scared of those things. What part of the chicken do they come from?!
