I just went to the " spanish and american" food place on Nostrand.
Two words: Cuban Sandwich
Two more : Four Dollars
Two more: Totally Awesome
Two more( do you see a pattern here?) : Gut Bomb
Last Two: Food Coma
It was the most happening joint on Nostrand this morning.

how does it compare to carneviento?

well, that's better than los viejos amigos, which is like a 1 on that spectrum. I got a pernil sandwich there - the thing was DRY dry dry dry. no toppings, no sauce, no veggies, nothing. bone dry bread and bone dry meat. LAME. I shoulda walked a few more blocks to carneviento. damn.

The pernil at Viejo Amigos isn't as good as carneviento, but you shouldn't write the place off completely. The place is totally mom-and-pop, and they are super-nice. Last time I was there (getting a sandwich that was admittedly maybe a 5 to carneviento's 10), they gave me one of their spare ribs to try, and it was delicious. Way better than carneviento for that item (I've ordered the ribs at carneviento too and they're not in the same league).
