SWF living in Bed Stuy--is it safe??

  • I am sorry to hear that you (Carmen) had bad experiences in this neighborhood. I am glad you like where you are now. Maybe exactly when and where you lived here came into play, maybe you had especially unpleasant people on your block. 90% of the interactions I have in Bed Stuy are pleasant, and the other 10% I can just chalk up to urban living.

I agree with Lexie (hi!) that the safety issue has much to do with being a woman, and would be a question no matter the neighborhood (for me).
  • I've had better experience than Carmen. I would agree with Arrbecca. 90% of my interactions are good. Then you always have 10% who can screw up your day.
  • Subject: S.S.R.?

Status, Sex, Race? I understand you posting the Status and Sex part. But, what does your race have anything to do with whether it will be safe? Being a single woman living alone anywhere is pretty much a gamble. Oh and I'm a SBF living in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

It depends on what part you live in. I go about my business and I know my surroundings. I know who to say "Good Morning" to and who to just walk by. I love my neighborhood. I'm active in the Community Board (which is CB 3 for Bed-Stuy) and my Block Association.
  • Because not all long time residents are like you, Divette. Some seem to be bothered by the fact that you look different and are unfriendly as a result.
  • I'm scurred..just kidding I think that's a decent question I didn't want to move around here at first because it used to be so scarey but I can deal. I am however, waiting for that booming bonus to move to a neighborhood better than mine :O).
  • someone called me a saltine once (not in bedstuy; down in crown heights). i laughed. they laughed. it was funny.
  • Saltine? is that a better class of cracker?
  • I was once called snowflake by an awkward kid outside of a bodega. I swear he said it for no other reason than to test my reaction. It wasn't threatening or anything, just... kind of goofy. I told the him I preferred "honky". He didn't know what to do with that and just laughed.
