Propane tank re-fills?

Anybody know where to exchange or get a tank re-filled for BBQ use? Bed-Stuy Home Depot doesn't do it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

check lowes on 2nd ave/12th street. not sure if they do it.

yep, the lowes does it. I think it's $20.

Propane refill is illegal in NYC. You can only do tank exchange. Home Depot and Lowes both do it.

Home Depot (in Bed Stuy) does NOT do it, it's a zoning issue because of its proximity to a school. We were hoping for something in the area (Clinton Hill/Bed Stuy) as we are with out a car but I suppose Lowe's will have to work.

Heard a rumor that there was a place on Nostrand, anybody know if that's true?

Home Depot on the border of Carrol Gardens and Red Hook

They only do exchanges. It's illegal to refill in NY.
The Bed Stuy one is apparently too close to a school to propane sales.

I only have swapped out tanks at Lowes. Faster. Never knew that refilling was an option! The tanks at Lowes are always new and clean so never a problem.

Useful trivia - My Dad-in-law who's worked part-time for Home-Depot-ish stores tells me that the propane tanks are almost always old - they're repainted and cleaned so as to look new. There's a date stamp on each - they're only allowed to be used for 8-10 yrs (sorry forgot the exact time frame) before needing to be destroyed.

Check the date stamp - if you're the paranoid type and notice that the date is expired or close to expiration - pick another tank.
