Established Dance party seeks new Brooklyn venue-suggestions
Hey
I've been running a monthly 1960s dance party called the Subway Soul Club for nearly 8 years now and we're looking for new venue in Brooklyn. ( Some folk may have attended our huge New Years Eve party at The Bell House ).
Having become disillusioned with the bridge and tunnel crowd invading many parts of Manhattan on the weekend these days, I'm hoping people may be able to make some suggestions for a new home in Brooklyn that I can follow up on.
So far everything we've seen is too small to have dancing or is so big they want to charge us $500 to rent the space. We can't cover those kind of costs and pay DJs . Up till now we've been a free night getting a cut of the bar but would consider a small entrance fee if necessary. Traditionally we have been Saturday night one a month ( though Friday would do ) and can bring in a crowd of about 150 people, maybe more, depending on location.
The place must have dance space and a bar but we're open to suggestions in what form it takes. A bar with a back room for dancing or a small club or gig venue could work, or maybe a cabaret venue or a cheap private 'for hire' space who might be interested in hosting a regular event.

Any thoughts?

Hi. Sounds great -- I wanted to go to the NYE party but had other plans.
I'm assuming you've already considered the Bell House... what's the story there? Seems perfect. -
Yes The Bell House wanted us to do it there but the big room is way too big for the monthly slot and they have bands on at weekends so the front bar ( which WOULD be the right size ) becomes a highway to the main room where the music may not be compatible with ours. Thanks for the suggestion though.
BTW We are doing a big soul weekender there Aug 28/29th! -
Sounds like a subset of Felix Hernandez's Rhythm Revue yes?
PM me with an e-mail address and I'll give you the list of all places that have a cabaret license and hence legal dancing -
No we're completely separate from that set up. I went once years ago and it seemed to be a much older crowd than ours and we only do 60s music. Thanks for the info. Thats great!

Oh, I know. I am totally looking forward to it. -
you do realize that by definition people from brooklyn are part of the bridge and tunnel crowd?
-
LOL! Thats funny. I never thought of myself as that! I must start wearing a baseball cap immediately :-). Well I guess I mean 'weekenders' who come and stand and drink beer in the middle of the floor when people are trying to dance. The LES is a very different place these days.
