Can anyone recommend an affordable upholsterer?

I just got a $400 quote from DAS (JUST for labor) for a pretty straightforward chair. Anyone know of someone with more affordable prices?

  • There's a place on Cortelyou rd. I never used them but they have been there forever.
  • Thanks Meredith - Cortelyou and what cross street?
  • You can also try General Nitemare on Columbia Street:

$400 sounds pretty reasonable, depending on your chair.
  • There is a place on 5th ave and about 14th or 15th strett. It is on the corner, but can't remember which cross street. They do great work and if you bring your own fabric the cost is reasonable.
  • Thanks veets. I've used them before for a replacement cushion and it ended up costing me $200!! Not to mention they were completley obnoxious about my lack of fabric knowledge.

Gee I am suprised that you had such a bad and expensive experience with them. As I think about it, whether I knew something about fabric had nothing to do with my experience. A friend of mine, who does know about this stuff went with me to choose fabric and when we brought the chairs and the fabric in to this store she basically told them the details of how she wanted the job done and they did the work beautifully and with good customer service.
  • DAS is the place on Cortelyou according to my Google search. I'm looking for an upholsterer too.
  • Thanks! I already got a quote from them. Maybe $400 is the norm but it seems like a lot if that doesn't include the fabric.
  • I want to redo a sofa but it'll probably cost the same as buying a new one.
