What is PLG Like? — Brooklynian

What is PLG Like?

So my husband and I have decided to go ahead and move to Prospect Lefferts. We wont have much time before we move, but we have narrowed it down. I dont know much about Crown Heights, and I want to be close to some stuff. We are both 25, and just looking to hear what the local area is like here?

Comments

  • I dont go there often the housing is nice and the roti and doubles I had there was top notch. I know a few people who live there who like it apart from it being pretty dead at night.
  • Any walk up apartments, or brownstones that are in the area? We are looking for a studio/1 bdrm walk up/ brownstone (ei. building with a front stoop. ha). I am hoping this area offers that!
  • maybe you should go there and walk around before you move there.

if you dont like caribbean food you might not want to live there.
  • There's no substitute for an actual walk around the neighborhood, but at least you can get a feeling for what some of the blocks look like by taking a virtual walk around using google maps:

    http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=maple+st+and+bedford+ave+brooklyn+ny&sll=40.662931,-73.954875&sspn=0.010206,0.022724&ie=UTF8&ll=40.660441,-73.95685&spn=0.010206,0.022724&z=16&iwloc=A&layer=c&cbll=40.660448,-73.956745&panoid=umZrD0h52ET5xwAwaWFWNQ&cbp=12,85,,0,5

Use the cursor keys to "walk around."
  • One thing- within the PLG historic district, homeowners are not allowed to break up houses into apartments. They're supposed to be single family occupied only. This has preserved a lot of the beautiful architecture and decreased the amount of turnover of properties, giving the place a real community feel, but also makes apartments simply not available on some of the nicer blocks.
  • Thanks carnivore. Am doing it now!
  • Subject: Single family restriction in PLG

The single family restriction only applies to Lefferts Manor, which is about 2/3rds of the PLG Historic District. The north side of Lincoln Road, between Bedford & Rogers, and both sides of Sterling Street and Lefferts Avenue, between Bedford & Nostrand are outside of Lefferts Manor, but in the PLG HD. There are also many brownstones outside of the HD. However, although there are many brownstone apartments, my impression is that most of the younger people who've moved to PLG in the last several years live in apartment buildings on Ocean Avenue, Lincoln Road, Lefferts Avenue, Hawthorne Street, etc. OTOH, living in the middle of Lefferts Manor, I don't know all that much about rentals--best to see for yourself.
  • okay cool. I am just looking for something small. a small apt. complex, like 8-10 or so units in a building. I was hoping PLg offered this, that or a studio/1 bdrm in a brownstone.
  • I forgot to ask, how much can you afford, rent-wise?
  • Mamacita- maximum 1200, for a studio. I know thats cheap, Ive found many less, but dont really know their location ect in exact form. ya know?
  • You might want to join the Lefferts Yahoo Group and post your question there. Even though this message board is labeled "Crown Heights and Prospect Lefferts Gardens", it concentrates mostly on the former:
