New low for Met on Fulton St — Brooklynian

New low for Met on Fulton St

Just a quick PSA about what passes for a supermarket in our neighborhood.

We all know about the rotten produce and terrible service at the Met on Fulton St/St James but they reached a new low last weekend. I went to buy some chicken and as usual I bought the Murray's organic chicken because their regular chicken is disgusting. It was 3 days before the use by date but when I brought it home it was completely spoiled. It clearly had not been properly refrigerated. There were also about 5 stickers on the back of the package which makes me think they knew it was spoiled and lowered the price accordingly, or perhaps they altered the sell by date and put it out there regardless. Nothing would surprise me at that place.

The scariest part was when I brought it back nobody at the store was the slightest bit surprised. Apparently it had happened before and they had done nothing about it. They gave my money back but that's not really the point. Bad produce is one thing but spoiled chicken is unsafe and unacceptable.

I've always avoided going there but I definitely will never buy meat there again unless they change ownership. I plan on filing a complaint with the board of health today but I thought I would post here too so you all can avoid the stinky meat.

  • ew. thanks for sharing.

    so disappointing.
  • Those guys turn off the freezers/refrigerators at night to save money. I have gotten many spoiled dairy & meat items from there, and freezer burned ice cream.
  • Ice cream is always freezer burnt over there. But they're really the only game in town for many of us unless we want to walk with our grocery bags.
  • maybe try the delivery services some of the other stores have... The foodtown on Fulton and Brooklyn Ave is not as bad as the Met. The produce is actually pretty decent there and I have never gotten spoiled meat. Not the greatest cuts of steak but def the best in the hood.....
  • fresh direct!
  • i'm all about fresh direct. i also shop the met frequently for produce and other groceries and have never had a problem. that may be because i've never once purchased meat in there and probably never will.
  • wow...

every frozen item that i have ever bought from the Key Foods on Franklin and Fulton street has been freezer burned or completely devoured in ice crystals and a lot of the items on their shelves are past "Best Buy" dates. the eggs in the cartons would always be cracked. the whole thing is ridiculous.

the funny thing is that i stopped going to Key Foods and instead would walk the extra blocks to Met foods because i thought it was better! guess i was wrong.
  • wait- they turn off their freezers and refrigerators at night? surely that cannot be legal?!

i occasionally buy my produce there when i'm too busy or lazy to go further afield where things are fresher. and time and time again, the fruits and veggies are not only more wilted and unattractive, but they really do not taste very good either.

i find the owners and employees to be generally kind and friendly people and i do wish them well. but this store can't just attempt to re-brand itself with glowing "organic produce!" signs and expect that to suffice. they need to seriously up their game, ASAP.
  • "they" and "it" is Met on fulton, by the way. sorry for not specifying.
