uh oh, michael allen has some competition now... eek!

Well I stopped in the bakery today with my nephew and I can vouch for their cake. That is all they had at the time. Cupcakes and slices of cake and they said muffins, cookies and other stuff to come. I love Michael Allen desserts, especially since he is down the block from me but he has some competition in the cake dept. We tried the red velvet and the carrot and bought pineapple and coconut for my sister.Simply delicious.Like Michael Allen they use fresh pure ingredients, at least in what we tasted. The carrot cake was especially delicious with plump juicy raisins, pineapple and carrots.Moist beyond belief and the icing...omg.Very very good. I had to get out of there not only because kids think money grows on trees but mainly cause I dont need my hips to spread any more. The red velvet cake didnt disappoint either. Before I could put my change in my pocket my nephew practically had eaten the thing. I cant wait to try the strawberry shortcake.Prices are average as well, $2 for cupcakes and $5 for slices of cake. I do wish them well and hope they get some foot traffic to stay in business. They have a couple of tables and I forgot to ask about wifi but they have only been open a couple of days so I didnt want to bombard them with questions. The are open from 10 am to 7pm so Michael Allen can get the latecomers as he stays open later.

Subject: Good, but...
A new bakery is always welcome, but what I'd really like to see is a bread bakery, not another cake bakery. -
Michael Allen on Grand & Fulton has great breads.
-
Yeah, but even there they aren't the main thing. CEnter City Philadelphia has Metropolitan bakery, where you can get a variety of breads.
-
i mean i guess if you're looking to buy dozens of loaves at a time you might be out of luck, but both michael allen and choice market make several great breads for folks seeking average quantities.

I went in last week and my friend and I prefer Michael Allen and will probably stick with them in the future. Essential Cake's staff isn't as friendly, the atmosphere isn't as inviting and the baked goods selection isn't as varied. The red velvet slice of cake I had wasn't bad. Big slice for 5 bucks -- run of the mill cake, though, I must admit. I may come back in 6 months from now to see what/if things have improved.

I hope this bakery does well, but it was pretty average cake and yes, the service was kinda cold. Since Cake Man Raven and Michael Allen are both so close, I'm surprised this business isn't opting to diversify a bit and give us something new-- like coffee, pastries, or bagels for the morning commute, for example.

Well after dinner, we headed to Essential Cakes for dessert. I must say they serve a good strawberry shortcake. They must have heard you guys cause the staff was very welcoming and friendly. Matter of fact, my friends and I spent at least 15 mins chatting about men and relationships.Hopefully they will be making my friends wedding cake in a few months. Also they now serve huge chocolate chip cookies for $1.
