    Does domestic violence count?

The Howard family, formally of Brooklyn. (deceased)
  • For killed, you can use the NY Times murder map: http://projects.nytimes.com/crime/homicides/map?scp=1&sq=murder map&st=cse. Don't know where you can get just shot

If you define crown heights very loosely, there appear to have been 4 in the last 6 years:

2003 Atlantic btw New York and Brooklyn
    2003 Eastern Pkwy and Buffalo
2006 Carrol btw Schenectady and Utica
    2007 Rogers and Lefferts
  • And just to be precise the last (2007) was the death of Officer Timishenko, who was a police officer killed in the line of duty.
  • and thanks for the data, mougar.

Wow, four perps to take the guy down, too...
  • mr. met - It's stupid because who cares if they're black or white? Why even ask that question? Too many people are getting shot and guns are too easy to get.
  • rosweed:

from a certain point of view, you are right. it's terrible when someone gets shot and/or killed; it doesn't matter if that person is black or white. and i agree that too many people are getting shot. i also agree that guns are too easy to acquire and that too many people are getting shot.

but analyzing the patterns of criminal activity can provide information and insights. why else would the new york times (among other media outlets/organizations) go to the trouble of providing such information (see link above)? obviously people who make it there business to analyze crime find this information valuable in some way.
  • It's not really a big mystery.

Crown Heights is poor neighborhood that is ~90% black. Poverty means more crime. Since there are very few white people in Crown Heights most crime will not involve them.
  • Mr.Met,you should ease into life realll slow.Take a peek at the urinal watch BET for 30 min at a time. There is no differnce in death, black or white Do we agree that anybody regardless of size, sex, color or faith being shot is a bad thing.Your post smells of who puts themselves in a wrong place at the wrong time.Black men are shot more than any other group. The reasons are many the solutions start with people not giving a F&*K what color the person is but why he or she was shot.Divided we are beaten. Why the NY Times has thought it important to break crime up into white and "other" groups is for them to know.It is surely not important unless the police and social services are being poured where they are needed.
  • ranger:

you don't know why i asked the question. i don't put myself in the wrong situation at the wrong time.

and why don't you use the spacebar? it's annoying to read your posts.

and i said it's terrible when anyone dies, black or white.

    and BET sucks.
  • My 2 cents: Doesn't matter - the blood spilled was red.

Back in the day, the argument was why the prisons are filled with black men - the debate started with inadequate representation or propensity for crime. That argument then spiraled off into unequal treatment by police, unfair opportunities for employment, inadequate education - blah, blah, blah.

Most crimes committed in poorer neighborhoods are by the residents of those neighborhoods - whether it is against each other or against someone who just happened to be passing through and was at the wrong place at the wrong time.

I think the Times study has done a great disservice by not addressing the true issue at hand - - not WHO is dying (as defined by race) but WHY? And more importantly, HOW it can be stopped.
  • That NY Times study does list the motive (why?) for the murders when the police were able to discover it.
  • Mr. Met.

I will never assume to understand your motivations for posting what you posted, but I will say this.

Maybe, just maybe, your post opens up an avenue of debate on the validity of asking the question "I am moving to so and so... is this safe??" when the asker is not of the same background as the majority of the prospective nabe's inhabitants.

    NOW BEFORE I GET FLAMED.

Let me just put a thought out there, I have seen somewhere (I am not sure where and am too lazy to look right now) that most crime is committed within the same ethnic/racial group. As a black woman, shouldn't I feel more scared of possible rape in Crown Heights than a white woman?

I don't know, so PLEASE DON'T FLAME ME, but I wonder whether a) Most crimes are not random, but are really part of an ongoing dispute, or hit etc.

    OR

    b) Most people pick their targets on how easy it would be to get away with the crime.

With B, mugging a white person, may attract more unnecessary police presence since honestly in this society, some people's plights are "more important" than others. I hate to put it that way, but look at the coverage of Immete Gulliene (sp) a white latina woman who was raped. See how much coverage the Central Park Jogger got versus, say Chanel Petro-Nixon a black honor student who was raped and killed and hardly made mention of. Many black women and children go through that and die in relative obscurity, because its "black on black" crime.

Just thoughts to stir up conversation.
  • Psycho-ologist:

you're good! that's actually exactly why i asked the question, but not for myself. i lived in crown heights for a year a few years ago and just moved back, so i'm used to the neighborhood and feel totally comfortable. one of my roommates, however, is a little nervous because this is his first time in crown heights and brooklyn in general. i'm sure he'll feel totally comfortable in a few weeks, but i thought i could comfort him by finding a statistic like this. to me, the stat says that, in general, you won't find trouble unless you are looking for it. obviously, the statistics also have to do with the fact that crown heights is a predominantly black neighborhood, so you would expect most murder victims to be black.

you shouldn't apologize or worry about getting "flamed." you didn't say anything wrong.
  • Dear Psycho-ologist,
I dont disagree with you with your perception that the media and police find some peoples plights "more important," but it is more that a question of black or white.

The media covered the central park jogger and Immete Gulliene's cases because Central park and the lower east side are tourist and entertainment destinations that thousands of people visit, so a crime committed there affects a lot more people and is more noteworthy than a murder in Crown Heights. Although the rape and murder of Chanel Petro-Nixon is a terrible tragedy , there is little to make it of regional importance.w

There are many women and children of many colors that are murdered or raped and never get newspaper coverage
  • ...exactly.

There was an interesting article a few years ago in the New Yorker (or some other magazine, I can't remember), that pointed out that police response time and police "politeness" had improved as a result of Harlem's gentrification.

The article argued that the change was due to the increased income and social class of the callers ...it pointed out that the vast majority of the callers continueud to be Af-am, and the crimes complained about (drug sales, street crime, etc) remained pretty constant as well.

P.S. Just in case I need to state it: Old fashion racism still exists, however sometimes its more about discrimination based on social class
  • Total agreement and have personal experience of the same.

When I was working in midtown, I was mugged. Just a homeless guy snatching money as I was getting a Metrocard. Within 12 hours (I went home to Brooklyn after just filing a brief report), a detective was at my workplace to investigate. Mugshots. Walking thru the station to possibly identify the guy. Follow up call.

Same scenario - but it was a friend that was mugged in Brooklyn a few weeks earlier. NOT the same response time (more like 2 days later), attention or politeness.

The midtown detective flat out said it. If it is a tourist destination, it will have a higher priority. Gotta keep that flow of $$$$ safe.
  • Nice to see this turn healthier than it seemed to be headed...

I just moved to CH from PH, and have been giving this CH board an occasional viewing. I've been bummed not to see much activity as with the PH boards -- any theories or observations why?
  • we just dont have that much here that is interesting to go on about.

    :cat:
  • well, we're just going to have to make some stuff up then
  • I was poor growing up there and there weren't muggings and shootings.People worked hard and though we didn't have much we didn't try and take it from those who did.
  • Sterling 2000:
Just curious but what was all of the chatter on the Prospect Hts board about? The Atlantic Yards project? Restaurant reviews? Raves or pans about some club or bar?
If so, I'd rather have a discussion like this. Seems a lot more meaty to me, who rarely goes out to a club or bar and who thinks the Atlantic Yard phobics are just a bunch of NIMBIES wrapped up in pretentious rhetoric.
This board has a lot of edgy topics. Were doing something unique here.
