Impact of closing Adams street service road?
I saw an article in the Post last week that talked about a proposal to close the service road on Adams from the hotel to Tillary Street to create a pedestrian mall. I think this is a bad idea.

What does everyone else think? Is there anyway that this works as a destination for families or nannies and children during the day? What about lunch hour crowds from the courthouses. What do you think?

The whole area between Tillary and the east river on Adams is quite hard to manuver now, I can't imagine if it is blocked up by a mall. Not to mention what it will do to the already heafty BQE traffic.

As far as lunch times and court hours, the bustle never really stops. Peak walking hassard is anywhere from 8-10, 12-2 & 5-7. The only real break we get is on the weekends which this development would surely null and void. -
There was a bit of discussion about this on Brownstoner and someone who claims to be in the know said that they would be closing down the street behind the pizzaria on Fulton and Adams and the portion of the service road that runs to the first entrance to the service road off Adams and putting the plaza there. It still doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but that at least still allows traffic to flow on the northern portion of the service road.
The theory is that there are 2,500 people who walk through that street/area that would sit there and eat their lunches versus walking over to the area behind the municipal building that has trees, fountains, and park area and eating there. It doesn't qute work for me, but what do I know? -

Interesting. Only bus traffic is allowed through that whole mall area anyway so I guess it wouldn't cause much congestion. I haven't really noticed an overflow of people eating there lunches outside the supreme court but I'm sure they need some sort of reason for it all...
