We need police and park authorities to ask grown adults to treat public spaces with respect and to not break littering laws? We are not dealing with adult humans! We're dealing with an invasion of bad-mannered-law breaking-vermin.
With litter bug adult role models, these babies and children will grow up to be litter bugs. I say we exterminate ALL these litter bugs -- males, females, and off-spring. It's a big invasion of cockroaches littering our parks with dirty diapers, broken glass, cooking utensils, blankets, and grills. KILL THEM ALL!
According to the media, some corporations supported this attack on our park. If true, I say we drop a bomb on the guilty corporation's headquarters. -
-
Says nothing about permits, and the lack thereof, of course. Sounds lame, "leaving the clean-up till the next day".
-
Sounds like someone's high-school kid wrote it. Can someone make a note to raise hell when the invite goes out for next year?
-
What a bunch of bull. I didn't see anyone passing out trash bags, I didn't hear any announcements come through their sound system asking folks to take their trash with them. They got caught acting like selfish Brooklynites and then were allowed to weasel their way out.
The same day of this illegal party, there was a permitted Arab American day event going on by the entrance to the park by the movies. The event was just as messy, but there were clean up crews there until it looked perfect. Imagine if the Arab American event was not permitted, it would have been broken up in about three seconds. -
Same situation yesterday on a much smaller scale. On Saturday, I saw a gathering of about 20-25 people with a very elaborate barbeque in the Long Meadow near the underpass/tunnel. I don't remember people barbecuing in this area in the past, but apparently it is permitted. Several hours later when I passed by, they were still partying, now with music that literally could be heard from the far side of the Meadow. On Sunday morning the area was full of trash on the ground, as well as trash directly across the sidewalk at the benches where some of the people had been eating. I took pictures and will make a complaint ...

Please do PSN! Hell, the Brooklyn Paper has been covering the mess int e park story, send them your pics and story!

Statement from MIHventures
Re: Sunday, July 19, 2009 Event in Prospect Park
On Sunday, July 19, 2009, MIHventures hosted an event in Prospect Park. Attendance at
the event was much greater than anticipated, overwhelming our clean-up efforts. Our
efforts to restore the park to its original condition extended late into the evening, but after
exhausting our supplies, we decided to continue the clean-up the next day. When we
returned with the necessary supplies and man power, the park had been cleaned. We
deeply regret that volunteers and park staff ultimately shouldered the responsibility of
cleaning up after our event.
MIHventures, on behalf of ourselves and our patrons, sincerely apologizes to the
community for the condition of the Park on Monday morning. We are currently working
with Prospect Park to ensure that the park remains a clean and enjoyable place for all, as
we too are members of the Brooklyn community who use and appreciate Prospect Park.
To show our support for Prospect Park and our respect for the community, MIHventures,
in conjunction with Prospect Park, is organizing a volunteer clean-up effort to take place
early this fall.
MIHventures is excited to work with Prospect Park moving forward, as we continue to
serve the community.

That news release above is the biggest bunch of b-s. Yeah, it's OK to trash the park, but we'll pretty please promise you a "clean-up" day in the fall.
Something not right is going on here. -
That's crap. If you exhausted your supplies (garbage bags???), you can find anything you want in this town 24x7. Plus, there didn't seem to be any effort to move garbage close to garbage cans or anything else that would indicate any sort of clean up effort happened at all.

Subject: The Way Things Are
At the nearby annual Caribbean Day Parade, there is always a shooting and three stabbings. It is expected as part of the deal. A lot of people on that side of the park are packing, and they are very quick to utilize their little friend, with very little provocation.
The police assume, correctly, that a similar percentage of people at this type of event are also packing, and would rather see the law abiding citizens of Park Slope deprived of the use of the park for a few days than to spark a shooting(s) over it.
It's just another of many signs of the current atmosphere where those who make threats of violence, actual or implied, get their way, and those who respect their fellow man and society and common decency get the shaft. And I don't mean the "wakka wakka" kind of Shaft. That Shaft would never do something so uncool. -

I am officially subscribed to to many posts;...
For a minute I thought you were talking about postal employees. -
Korla,
I agree with you. When I play soccer during the off season in the park and the rangers come by and say you can't play on the grass now, we simply pack up and go home. The rangers know we aren't a threat and they know we will call them sir.
Maybe if we said "no, we aren't stopping our soccer game," the President would invite us to the White House for a beer. -

Okay, can I just say that I'm pretty sick of all of the subtle racism that is running through this thread. "A lot of the people on that side of the park are packing"??? "The police assuume, CORRECTLY that a similar percentage of people at this type of event are also packing..."????(emphasis added)

WTF?
Why is it that you think that ALL black people are inherently violent? What support do any of you have for these sorts of assumptions? Is there a significant level of violence that occurs on the east side of the park as opposed to the west side of the park? I'd suggest that from reading this board as well as events reported in the Brooklyn Paper and other places, that there is a fair amount of violence on the North side of the park in what is clearly not a minority neighborhood.
And yet, to read these comments, one would think that the park was overrun with gun toting, knife weilding lunatics on the day in question. What evidence is there that anyone who attended this event had a weapon? In fact, setting aside the trash, I have yet to see a report of any violence or crime that was committed on that day by any of the attendees.
Yet folks seem to think that it is okay to come here and compare the attendees to cockroaches and suggest that they all (males, females and CHILDREN) be exterminated, without anyone even suggesting that such a reaction is close-minded, reactionary, and yes, based upon feelings that black people are inferior.
I don't think that the people who left their trash around were correct in what they did. But the fact that they left behind litter, and required others to clean after them does not make them violent criminals who should be killed. I understand being upset, but I don't understand why some posters feel like its appropriate to voice these kinds of extreme reactions and why no one has seen fit to call them on it. -
here we go...

That was not subtle racism. That was sarcasm. .... I hope -
If you're curious about distribution of murders around the park, you can always use the Murder Map. I don't know if there is a similar one for violent crimes in general.
-
so it would appear that there are at least more murders on the east side of the park...
-
did it really take 3 pages before the race card got played?
-
Race has been at the center of park-gate all along. I was close by with my wife and friends when the first several hundred people showed up and started dropping trash. However, I didn't see the rangers come by and try to break things up as some have suggested.
This party, with no permit, was tolerated and allowed to grow and grow to at least 1000 people because most of the participants were black. Clearly, the rangers and police were not interested in potential conflict and avoided this party and the mounds of trash it produced. If said party had been thrown by the famous Park Slope Parents group, with no permit, it would have been promptly shut down, at least, that is my opinion. -

The only "little friends" used on this side of the park are ones that come from Babeland. -
Subject: don't just apologize. rectify!
That's nice that MIHventures apologies, but if they're really sincere, they should pay for the clean-up of the park. Who cares if the clean-up efforts were "overwhelmed"? If you make a bigger mess, you spend more time and effort and clean it up. Or maybe market your events to more sanitary people. -
I don't suppose this ever happened, did it? I didn't hear about it, if it did.

So did their clean up ever happen.
Are they gonna do it again.
Is there a system in place to stop a giant party

It looked like anyone could have done anything in Prospect Park this Sunday -
According to the Brooklyn Paper's editor, the cleanup did happen.
