Subject: Taqueria
I used to love Taqueria, but the past few times I hav eaten I have gotten sick a few hours after dinner. I have even stopped going there for awhile.. gone back and gotten sick!
Oh well! -
roux42 - i agree. i used to love taqueria... when i moved from PS to PH last year, the only thing i was bummed about was being further from it.
but the last few times i've gone haven't been that good - but i couldn't put my finger on it. i thought it was just me.
i still love their chip sauce though (not sure you can call it salsa). -
I think Taqueria has always been over-rated. My current favorite Mexican place is Los Pollitos II on 5th Ave. Just really nice, high quality food and the prices are quite reasonable. The service is good as well. Last but not least, the vegetarian enchillada platter is excellent. IMHO.
[the writer of this post has no, none, nada financial interest in the subject restaurant] -
Not to tarnish Taqueria's image but the last time I ate there a cockroach scurried underneath my table that was towards the back by the kitchen. I know those things aren't entirely preventable but it might be a sign of downward service.
-
I agree that the quality of Taqueria 's food has declined. Maria's Mexican Cafe on 4th and Union has pretty decent food, though it is somewhat expensive. Here's to hoping that the former City Lighting spot will yield tasty and affordable Mexican treats!
-
Flute - I drive by that place often and always wanted to try - do you know if they deliver also?
-
I think Los Pollitos does indeed deliver.
As for La Taq, I have experienced multiple cockroach sightings. The last time I was there, not only was there a baby cockroach discovered ON OUR TRAY but also there was a hair in my veggie taco.
Needless to say, that's why it was the last time. It's 4 blocks from me, but I haven't been back in months and months. My fiance has resorted to sneaking over there when I'm away for the evening. -
I agree about Los Pollitis II. Delish. The rotisserie chicken and chicken enchiladas are very good and they have a little outside space. Inside, the decor is nice.
I also agree that Taqueria is not all that. Or maybe it's just that I've gotten bored of it after eating so many of them. I just think it's a risky business venture to try to compete with it.
Time and our tast buds will tell. Right now I'm excited to try Sorrell. I've got the babysitter lined up. -
I don't understand the allure of La Taqueria. Their brunch, which my wife loves, is flavorless, the joint is dirty and dinner is pricey. Almost any other slightly Mexican restaurant would be an improvement, especially if they offer excellent mole.
-
I just ate at Taqueria for the first time last weekend. I got what I thought was a really great burrito--and my husband, who lived for years in Tucson and is very picky about Mexican food, loved his too.
Maybe it's hit-or-miss? I mean, I don't plan to go there every day or anything, but it's definitely on my list of lunch choices if I'm hanging out in Park Slope on a Saturday or something... -
When I first started going to Taqueria I was amazed by how fresh everything tasted - lately it just hasn't been the same. I think it's still ok but I feel like the prices have gone up and the quality/freshness have come down.

word. i turned 30 and nothing really tastes the same. it's comforting to know that in this case, it's not just me. -
Los Pollitos also gives you crayons and you can draw on the table while you wait for your food.
FYI, the name comes from a spanish childrens song, the hook goes
"Los Pollitos dicen 'pio pio pio', cuando tienen hambre y cuando tienen frio"
which means
The little chickens say 'chirp chirp chirp' when they get hungry and when they get cold. -
Rita, don't worry about the "Turned 30 and Your Taste Buds Fail You" syndrome ... it's only temporary. But now when you turn 40 ...
Oh, never mind, I'll let you blissfully live out the rest of your 30's in Taste Treat Heaven ...
But then again, maybe it's my civic duty to prepare you ...
Oh dear, SUCH a conundrum ... :? :? :? -
What about Yummy Taco? Their delivery is quick and accurate. The food is really cheap and "Yummy". And, I know it's Chi-Mex, but I'm really impressed by the quality of their food and the size of their portions. Maria's is good too, but it's really expensive for the ingredients that they use. You'd be much better off ordering food in and making your own Margaritas and Sangria.

I've eaten at Los Pollitos several times, but have vowed not to go back. I was in there on Saturday and saw TWO cockroaches...I left before my order came. One was gross, but acceptable...BUT TWO? No way. I left while they were preparing my order. Gross! -
I went once to Yummy Taco and asked for some salsa verde on the side, and they charged me 75 cents for it. I told them to keep it and my order and fled for La Taqueria They offer salsa verde for free. Last time I checked salsa verde was not endangered.
As for Mexican busts - Lobo.
I didn't know if I was at a TGIF's or what? Food sucked, service okay -
Taq is a shit-hole. My wife got food poisoning last time we ate there. And she was pregnant. Never again.
