I think I want some new jewelry but don't know where to go (due to lack of ever really shopping for it since I was a kid)? Who sells what in the neighborhood?

I just want to go browse a few places and see what I like. Probably necklaces/rings mostly (I usually have to have earring posts replaced with gold since I'm highly allergic to everything else).

I'd probably go for more modern stuff and I'm willing to pay more if it's nice (well made/good materials) but I'm not looking for fancy pieces. The few things I have (gifts--again, I'm not a pro jewelry shopper) are in the nicer precious metals and stones genre except for my mammoth ivory pieces (the nerd in me loves these).

Maybe the nicer jewelry booths at a flea market (Union Square Christmas shop) type pieces.

I need to do something fun (like get myself a pretty) since my torn up ankle is keeping me from everything I love doing.

Ivory????? Please tell me you don't wear ivory! I'm not going to get all PETA on you, but killing beautiful enormous elephants for tusks sickens me.

Wooly mammoth Ivory. Not elephant. They're all dead now anyway. My dad got it for me in Alaska and was told that only certain people (like eskimos or something) get to sell it. I would NEVER buy anything with elephant parts. I probably wouldn't buy things like diamonds either since part of their mining seems to be bad for wild animals.

my father used to travel to Africa 30 years ago and bought some ivory pieces. I put a ban on that shit right away! My mom still has them, and they're beautiful, but there will never again be a new piece of ivory bought

Brooklyn Indie Market - if you're there, you may want to check out the Brooklyln Indie Market on Union and Smith (open on weekends). I bought my mom some jewelry there.

Urban Alchemist - Also, there's a jewelry/antiques/home furnishiing shop right off 5th Avenue (on 5th). I fell in love with earrings there and asked the owner to make a new pair, but longer, and she was happy to do so (she is sometimes at the Indie Market, above).

Okay, I just returned from browsing 5th Ave. near my place, and went into lots of stores I've never gone into. I didn't get anything yet but had fun looking. A few highlights:

I started at Urban Alchemist - cute store, some interesting clothes and jewelry in general.

Under the Pig antiques - crowded with all kinds of kitsch. Not much of the jewelry appealed to me but a fun store to check out.

Lucia (?) - some cute necklaces (and clothes), but I couldn't make a decision yet.

Scaredy Cat cards and gifts - nice big space next to Playa. A few neat $30-40 necklaces and bracelets that I liked.

And several more but I don't remember them all. Now the dog is missing his evening walk since my stroll was hell on my gimpy ankle and it's swollen into immobility.

belzjm, I think I've peaked in the windows of that place before. I'll have to check it out.

d123, I hope to go to Andi Woo soon. The reviews are good.

If you go to Andie Woo, I would suggest trying on some of their jewelry even if you don't think it's your style. They have a good buyer's eye and have made me try on pieces I never would have thought would look good on me and I've ended up buying them.

Yes! i forgot all about this place, they have some very nice, one of a kind pieces.

Thanks for all the suggestions--they definitely reminded me of stores I tend to forget about.

We went to the Clay Pot today and there were some pieces I was interested in but zero service. Not once while we were there, including while I stood staring at a cabinet and trying to make eye contact with them, did an employee even acknowledge that we were there so we left after 10 minutes. Oh, and there were three employees chatting with each other not helping anyone.

I did get a nice necklace at Teddy's and saw several things I liked at the gift shop across from John Jay HS on 7th.

Forgot about the place across from the old John jay, they have some cute pieces, mostly costume, right?

I understand your frustration with no one at Claypot asking you if you needed help, personally, that has never happened to me there.

Maybe they were trying to be low pressure and were waiting for you toa sk for help? I know a lot of people go in there just to browse.

Small store, and the one necklace I really like was only $8K! I guess I do have limits on this sort of thing because I don't love any jewelry that much

Well I'm not much for jewelry, but when I first moved here about 20 years ago, a Russian couple owned a hole-in-the-wall jewelry store on 7th Ave. between 8th and 9th sts. They have since opened a nice-looking kinda traditional place on the corner of 8th st and 7th Ave. It's been going for many years itself. I admire the fact that they moved on up from a tiny shop, and that they have been here in the Slope for so long.

I like the guy, he and his wife work hard, and I think that kind of devotion and stick-to-it-iveness deserves at least a look. They have old and new.
