I'm trying to START / JOIN A BAND (Advice, female vocalist)
Subject: I'm trying to START / JOIN A BAND (Advice, female vocalist)
I'm trying to START / JOIN A BAND (Advice, please help (female vocalist/singer)I started singing around age 24, just as a release, and because I had always loved my music collection so much, and well, frankly, that's when I got an ipod. I always was an artsy type, with an eclectic taste in authentically interesting and profound and moving music. I have quite an intense personality, and no stage fright. Anyways, I am now 29, and music still plays a huge role in my life. I would like to join a band, and see where that goes, as I feel I have nothing to lose career-wise, and singing is such an important part of my life.
On the other hand, I know that I am 29 (not young), not into many of the current "hipster" / "indie" bands or musical scenes out there (meaning, it would be difficult for me, although not impossible, to find a band that I jive with), and I am not sure how much time I'd really want to devote to this. I also don't write music or songs at this point (many famous female artists didn't... janis joplin for one), don't play any instruments (barring some piano and violin lessons as a kid), etc. I do write poetry though, so the songwriting wouldn't be too much of a stretch. I'm attractive, but could stand to be in better shape. I think I will be more and more so, as I'm getting back on track health and diet and exercise wise. I also am not much of a "group" person. I am kind, and try to get along, but clearly an independent agent and non-conformist in terms of personality.
However, I absolutely have the "wild card" personality it takes to get up there and perform on stage. I already have performed in front of crowds (usually at subway stations) and it's no issue for me. I've got nothing but applause and compliments.
I guess I kept using the excuse of me being older not to do it, and I didn't start until a few years ago, so I didn't really seriously consider it when I was younger. I was too busy with school and such.
I'm really confused about it. I have tried putting up ads on places like stagebuddy.com and craigslist, to no avail. I would imagine I'd need to make a demo of my voice first, right?
I don't really care if I get famous or whatever, and I'm not interested in going the MTV / solo artist /pop star route- I despise pop music, and britney spears/beyonce appearance wise I am not. I'm kind of a 1960's girl myself. I will paste below my taste in music, and if you could, please give me some advice. Of course, I'd love it if this venture really took off, but for now, I'll settle for just doing it, no matter how small-scale it starts. I just want to see what happens with it. Really, I just want to try, because not trying it pains me even more.
*Maybe you can tell me what websites/ music stores/ bulletin boards/ venues people go through to start a band here in NYC. And one more geared towards my taste?
Can you also tell me how the whole process works? Like, make a demo of my voice, then what....?
I CAN SING ALL OF THIS STUFF, AND I KNOW I'D BE A GREAT ASSET TO ANY BAND, ESPECIALLY SINCE I'M LOUD, DON'T HAVE STAGE FRIGHT, HAVE A RANGE, AND CAN ARTICULATE THE LYRICS:
60's CLASSIC ROCK MUSIC (jimi hendrix, the doors, bob dylan, velvet underground, jefferson airplane, Sweet Water, paul simon, peter paul and mary, mama's and the papa's, janis joplin, the grateful dead), Soul Music (Aretha Franklin, Etta James, The Supremes, Marvin Gaye, The Temptations), some R and B, like Mary J. Blige, En Vogue, Sade, Erykah Badu, John Legend, etc, some Reggae (especially the marleys, but some dancehall, and yes, I can dance! sean paul, kevin lyttle, estelle), HUGE Jazz fan (coltrane, billie holiday, monk, miles davis, charlie parker), along with the Blues, Ray charles, Tom Waits, Tom Petty, Norah Jones, Robert Cray, Sonic Youth, The Cure, The Eagles, Guns N' Roses (in retrospect, they were pretty damn good), Santana, and only a bit of indie rock, like Arcade Fire, The Pixies, Nirvana, etc. Lately, I've been on my country-ish kick with Patsy Cline, The Grateful Dead and Fleetwood Mac. I spend most of my time listening to (and singing) older, retro music, simply because it's better quality, and the general current making-noise-on-guitars-while-failing-to-articulate-some-meaningless lyrics and sounding the same as everyone else gets tiring after awhile.
