Sorry for the very late reply to this but...
The lady on the phone seemed to want me to find a way to join, but it didn't feel right.
Like I mentioned before, the customer service people are super super nice. Mix that niceness with the fact that she understands how good of a deal USAA is and I can see that the phone lady might be suspiciously enthusiastic/overzealous about helping you join. But the company is legit.
The draw is all of that - great rates on things, superb customer service, benefits... This is the rare company actually trying to do right by their customers/members. I know that they will never screw me over on something...I actually trust them. I trust no company. But I trust them. One year they sent me a refund on my auto insurance because they didn't pay out enough in members' claims and collected too much money. Because they have so many members who are active duty military they find ways to make the lives of the transient easier...things like refunding those ridiculous ATM fees and developing iPhone/BlackBerry apps allowing you to take a picture of your check with your phone and have it deposited... My credit card interest rates have never gone up - not even when I was a flaky college student who would go months without paying. Stuff like that. -
There is a website that has a chart that compares insurance rates for renter's insurance in all parts of NYS including Brooklyn, www.ins.state.ny.us. USAA is a couple of dollars more than some obscure companies. I agree with everyone who loves USAA. This is the best company in the USA in my opinion. If you are lucky enough to quality for membership you will love it.
