Dinner a movie--in one place — Brooklynian

Dinner a movie--in one place

Did this over the weekend...great outdoor films & eats at Enoteca on Court. Here's the rest of the scgedule:

Aug 16 PRANZO DI FERRAGOSTO (Mid-August Lunch) (2008)
Despite the fact he is a middle-aged man, Gianni lives in an old house in the center of Rome with his mother, a woman of faded nobility who tyrannizes him and leaves him only enough free time to go to the tavern. On the eve of the Feast of the Assumption holiday, the apartment block manager--aware of Gianni's enforced "captivity"--suggests he look after his own mother for a couple of days, in return for the waiver of all the unpaid utility bills. Gianni Di Gregorio, director; 75 minutes.

Aug 23 LA DOLCE VITA (2008)
Federico Fellini’s 1960 classic about bon vivant journalist Marcello , who struggles to find his place in the world, torn between the allure of Rome's elite social scene and the stifling domesticity offered by his girlfriend, all the while searching for a way to become a serious writer. 174 mins.

Aug 30 MIRACOLO A MILANO (Miracle in Milan) (1950)
Once upon a time an old woman discovers a baby in her cabbage patch. She brings up the child and, when she dies, the boy, Toto, enters an orphanage. Toto leaves the orphanage a happy young man, and looks for work in post-war Milan. He ends up with the homeless and organizes them to build a shanty town in a vacant lot. The squatters discover oil in the land and Toto sees a vision of the old woman who gives him a magic dove that will grant him anything he wishes. Vittorio De Sica, director; 100 mins.

Sept 6 LE NOTTI DI CABIRIA (Nights of Cabiria) (1957)
Cabiria is a wide-eyed waif, a streetwalker living in a poor section of Rome where she owns her little house, has a bank account, and dreams of a miracle. We follow her nights (and days): a boyfriend steals 40,000 lire from her and nearly drowns her, a movie star on the Via Veneto takes her home with him, at a local shrine she seeks the Madonna's intercession, and then she meets an accountant who's seen her, hypnotized on a vaudeville stage, acting out her heart's longings. Federico Fellini, director; 110 mins.

Sept 13 CINEMA PARADISO (1989)
A famous film director returns home to a Sicilian village for the first time after almost 30 years. He reminisces about his childhood at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first brought about his love of films. He is also reminded of his lost teenage love, Elena, who he had to leave before he left for Rome. Giuseppe Tornatore, director; 155 mins.

Sept 20UMBERTO D. (1952)
Umberto Ferrari, aged government retiree, attends a street demonstration held by his fellow pensioners. The police dispense the crowd and Umberto returns to his cheap furnished room which he shares with his dog Flick. Umberto's lone friend is Maria, servant of the boarding house. She is a simple girl who is pregnant by one of two soldiers and neither will admit to being the father. Vittorio De Sica, director; 89 mins.

Sept 27DIVORCE ITALIAN STYLE (1961)
Baron Fefé Cefalù is a Sicilian nobleman bored of life and of wife Rosalia: he falls in love with young and beautiful cousin Angela, who spends summers in the same palace. Since divorce is impossible in Italy in the 1960s, he decides to kill the wife, knowing that sentence would be very light if he proved that he committed murder for a matter of honor, i.e. when he found the wife together with another man. Therefore, he starts finding a lover for Rosalia. Pietro Germi, director; 105 mins.

Oct 4JOHNNY STECCHINO (Johnny Toothpick) (1991)
Good-hearted but not very worldly, Dante is happy driving the school bus for a group of mentally handicapped children, while feeling he is somehow missing out on life and love. So he is very excited when after nearly being knocked down by her car he meets Maria, who seems immediately enamored of him. He is soon invited to her sumptuous Palermo villa, little suspecting that this is part of a plot. He bears an amazing likeness to Maria's stool-pigeon gangster husband and it would be convenient for them if the mobster, in the shape of Dante, was seen to be dead and buried. Roberto Benigni, director; 102 mins.

Oct 11THE ORANGE THIEF (2009)
Living on the outer boundaries of society, a thief with a penchant for oranges and some other country-wise ruffians steal fruit for sustenance, sale, and the sheer excitement of courting danger. After the thief ends up in a Sicilian jail, his life takes an unexpected turn when his bunkmate promises him a deal. Vinnie Angel, director; 84 mins.
