Fake broker leading people to my buildings

Last night I got a call from one of my tenants that a young man was trying to gain access to the building. The young man in question knew my name and stated that he has made an appointment with me for 8:30pm to see an apartment.
The tenant handed him her phone and I informed him that I don't have any apartments for rent. He stated that he has been contact with me all week long and we last exchanged emails that morning. I asked him what the email address was and he stated that it contained the word "slope". I informed him that I don't have an email like that and that he has been scammed.
When emailing a broker or someone you believe to be the landlord, make sure to get their phone number and make sure to see the apartment before sending any money.

A sketchy guy was hanging around my building last week and then we had apartments broken into. Perhaps he was checking the place out?

I'm thinking that he was trying to gain access to the building, and not necessarily that he had had any contact with a broker. You might warn your tenants to be careful.

And, yeah, it's great that you have a nice relationship w/your tenants and you're accessible, so when something like this happens they call.

the guy knew my name so i don't think its someone tryting to rob the place. the building is located on 5th avenue between 5th and 6th. A week ago I got a call from a broker who asked me about vacant apartments. I informed him that I dont have any and since I don't know him I would not give him the listings anyway. He might have scammed that guy who showed up.

I will visit the building often just to make sure and will inform the tenants to keep an eye out. i also plan on installing security camera's in the building, but that won't get done till a month or so.
