Bill Batson to Announce Candidacy, Sunday. 2pm City Hall

Bill Batson is announcing his candidacy for the 57th Assembly District this Sunday 3/26 at 2pm, on the steps of City Hall. All are invited.

Batson For Brooklyn!

Bill Batson arrived in the 57th Assembly District as a Pratt student in 1979, and has spent over 20 years dedicating himself to his community through public service. Bill Batson is a Prospect Heights resident.

He has been a tireless advocate for the homeless, renters, small businesses, homeowners, labor, the Arts, responsible policing, innovative youth programs, the expansion and protection of voting rights, education, and community centered development.

The 57th Assembly District is the home of the site where billionaire developers propose to use hundreds of millions of dollars of taxpayer money to tear down the homes of Brooklynites in order to erect an enormous sports arena and 16 highrise towers.

Bill believes that we must come together to demand guidelines that will ensure that our community play a major role in deciding when and how to develop our neighborhoods.

Bill Batson has the hard won experience that is necessary to help us demand and negotiate a better deal.

As Chair of the Community Board Fire Safety Committee Bill leads a weekly community night patrol in response to the recent outbreak of deadly arson fires. He is also an artist and writer, whose work has been displayed in several art shows in our neighborhood, and published in The Amsterdam News and Essence.

Please join Bill as he announces his candidacy for State Assembly this Sunday on the steps of City Hall. This announcement will begin with song, and we will culminate by marching across the Brooklyn Bridge to begin our campaign.

  • That's an odd choice of picture for the front page of his candidacy website. Aren't you supposed to have a big picture up front, so everybody knows who you are when you're running around at the GAP Greenmarket, shaking hands and kissing babies?

Which of these 12 apostles is the real Bill Batson? I'm guessing it's not the guy seated on the right...

Bill's subway series is pretty amazing, if you haven't seen it yet:

  • His alter ego is Captain Marvel. Shazam!
  • I've met Bill Batson - and while he is a political professional, he is not a professional politician...meaning he knows his way around Albany and City Hall, as a long-time operative and organizer for various democratic campaigns, but this will be his first time actually running for office, and he is as un-varnished and un-slick as any first time office seeker!

He is the real deal, people, a genuine do-gooder, with affinities that range across the wide spectrum of the district (not just with a few powerful interest groups). Prospect Heights should be proud to have Bill Batson representing us in Albany...

He's not a one-note, anti-Ratner protest candidate either - he has the proper perspective to see that issue as a manifestation of the dozen other socioeconomic tensions rooted deeply in this district: poverty and gentrification, small businesses and corporations, "old-timers" and new comers, black and white.

get registered, my friends - this is a rare opportunity in Brooklyn politics: an open seat!!!! Between this race, for the 57th AD, and the race for Major Owens' successor in the 11th Congressional, we are in for a hell of a summer....
