You should have been there during the 80's and 90's when I lived a half block away from the Houses. There were uniformed and not so uniformed cops there all the time, practically 24 hours a day, not to mention fire engines and ambulances. . .Some nights it sounded like a firing range. . . .rat a tat a tat a tat a tat. . ..

Gowanus Houses are better than they used to be, but there is still plenty of gunplay and murder there. The drugstore building lobbies have been shut down for years. Speaking of the Bad Old Days, Spike Lee's film "Clockers" was filmed there, and some real-life local denizens were used in the film.

As long as the cops show up and take everything that happens there like it's a huge deal I'm happy.

The area is being drastically upscaled (especially Smith St.) so you can be sure that the worst of the bad old days are gone at Gowanus... until the pendulum swings again in the year, oh, 2060 or so. But by then, long range criminal activity detectors/neutralizers will be in operation, so... -

I live near Bond and I've never had any problems walking down Bond. I've frequently walked all the way down to 3rd street at night and never once had a problem or felt like I was in any sort of danger.

Have you lived there very long? I grew up on Wyckoff (70's to early 90's) and most of my friends lived there. I practically lived on the handball court during my early teens. -
i moved here in 1983. i raised 3 girls here all grown now.
