Trash in and around Harmony Playground
Hi all,
I wanted to get a sense of what people are doing/have done/can do about the unbelievable amount of trash and filth constantly seen in and around the Harmony Playground/Bandshell area each weekend?
Before you get your internet-hater on: I'm not priggish, or wholly unaware of the realities of living near and using the park. I couldn't care less what people do in the park—their lives are none of my concern.
And this isn't about race, so don't bother. If the mess was made by all white people listening to REM while quietly playing UNO or reading Harry Potter, my commentary on the trash would be unchanged.
You obviously can't tell people what do do, so, my question again is, what can be done (contact authorities? park service people? local representative?) about seeing that that area, and the park as a whole is maintained?
What I've been doing is picking up the trash in the playground and throwing it away. My son's two, and I don't need him pouncing on sticky, half-eaten, food items.
And look, I'm here to see if people have constructive, cogent ideas about cleaning our park and playgrounds. Not to get into a pissing match with someone. So, hold your, "Move back to where you came from!", or "Lighten up!" or whatever. If you're not raising a family near Prospect Park, or if you couldn't care less… well, then, what are you doing responding to this post anyway!

My younger brother and sister totally liked Uno and I never got that. The game totally sucked. I was into Othello myself.

I'm on the other end of the park from you, down by Greenwood Ave. Generally speaking, trash isn't a problem down here except after beautiful weekends and holidays when there have been a lot of picnics.
Since the bandshell gets quite a lot more attention, I can see why it would be more trashed. What I mean to say by that is not 'my part is cleaner' but clearly the trash cleanup system is in place and running more or less smoothly. What I would suggest is calling the park maintenance people, and asking that they police that area more often for trash.
They may tell you they are doing all they can, perhaps they don't have the funds or what have you to apply more constant scrutiny in the area (I only suggest this because given that most of what I've seen of the park is clean, they must be aware if that area is worse.) In that event, maybe a volunteer neighborhood clean up brigade, or some kind of petition for more funds for the park would be something to look into creating. -
Seriously it has been trashier than normal the last few weekends. I am hoping it will just naturally clean up as less and less people BBQ every weekend.
Maybe we could have a neighborhood clean up day?
Howdy, Stranger!
