Brooklyn businesses cutting customers some slack? — Brooklynian

Brooklyn businesses cutting customers some slack?

After Ben Bernanke said that “from a technical perspective the recession is very likely over,” I asked small business owners on Church Avenue if it feels over to them.

“It feels the same to me,” Joann Rodriguez, 40, a pharmacy assistant at Konwaler Drugs, said, laughing.

Rodriguez and other business and property owners on Church Avenue told me they have been cutting customers and tenants some slack to help them weather the recession.

Since many of Konwaler Drugs’ customers have lost their jobs and cannot afford their prescriptions, Rodriguez said, Konwaler Drugs sometimes offers customers credit. “We’ll work with them,” she said.

I’ve read about how communities have helped small businesses handle the recession, like how shareholders raised $64,000 to help keep Vox Pop afloat (which CNNMoney.com covered on September 10).

However, I haven’t read or heard much — in Brooklyn or beyond — about how small businesses are helping their customers handle the recession. Has anyone else?
