7th avenue making a restaurant comeback...??

The Strong Buzz reports that the GM of 'inotecca is teaming up with Mike Burkett (a.k.a. Fat Mike from NOFX) to open Thistle Hill Tavern this December or January: "The restaurant, which will be located at corner of Seventh Ave. and 15th St. in the South Slope, will serve robust regional seasonal cuisine in a very laid back, turn-of-the-century tavern setting."

  • YES! =D> =D> =D> =D> =D>
  • love me my south slope!
  • One restaurant does not make a comeback.
  • beer table (which is now opening a 2nd branch in the chelsea market)
    fonda
    moim

these are places i would consider above average and helping elevate the quality of restaurants on 7th avenue.

(not on 7th, but lucali is opening in the south slope and the new lot 2 is delicious). i'm impressed with the new offerings coming to park slope lately. that was really my point.
  • Brook Vin, Cafe Grumpy, Barrio, new yet-to-open wine bar in old sushi place....

Barrio on 3rd Street is no way near South Slope, although I am very happy about all of the other new places
  • I was actually referencing 7th Avenue's comeback...(and technically, Moim isn't SS either.)

    Just to be clear.

    :-)
  • ^ah, ok. I haven't been to Moim, so no idea where it is. I thought this was a 7th Ave. South discussion.

    Carry on :-)
  • Unfortunately, growth in South Slope on 7th is limited due to the dead-ending of 7th at the cemetery. You'll notice there aren't a lot of storefronts after 16th or so. I think Fonda will help revive it a bit and Thistle Hill looks cool, though.

5th Avenue shows lots of potential, though. Lots of room to grow there. New English pub (w/ regional food and a roof deck!) moving in diagonally across the street from Buttermilk .
  • Anthony's deserves some credit, too. Where's the new wine bar opening up? What sushi space?
  • hanabi on the corner of garfield and 7th is turning into a wine bar supposedly. the rest of the space turned into that chicken and custard place, chicakadee chick...
  • This all sounds great, but I'm kind of stuck on the Fat Mike thing. That's weird and awesome all at the same time.
  • Also, Fonda is on 7th Ave. Have not yet been but it's gotten a lot of buzz and bring's a new level of sophistication to Mexican dining in this neighborhood.
  • Just saw this: Fonda has happy hour $3.00 beer/wine 5-7 (I think).

Definitely want to check that out!
  • went to Fonda and i was unimpressed. they served a $9 margarita that was one of the worst i have ever had. i ordered a chicken dish that was almost $20 and they served me basically all dark meat on the bone. if they're going to charge you that much for dark meat they should at least warn you on the menu that that's what you're getting! we had apps, main course, and dessert every single item was extremely salty. especially the guacamole. the service wasn't good either. we paid more than $100 for a lousy meal. what a rip-off. the space does look cool though--i guess we were paying for their nice light fixtures.
  • unfortunately, one of the first.. if not THE first.. thai restaurant on 7th avenue will be watching the come-back from the sidelines. thai taste, or 't', at the corner of carroll and 7th, has closed down. yes, it didn't keep-up with the trends, and restaurants on the 2nd floor generally have a rougher go of it, but the place was family-run, so that's sad.. and it's just one more depressing-lookling empty storefront.
  • did anyone ever go to this place? i went once and thought it wasn't great.

mango thai is a few blocks away and is absolutely terrific.

even lemongrass (also a couple blocks away) tasted better to me.

and song down on 5th is tied with mango as best thai in the slope, in my opinion.

i think what i'm saying is...too much thai around here. the best stay open, the mediocre ones don't make it. sad to see them go, but hopefully something better will come. that seems to be the trend, and i think it might actually be improving 7th avenue...
  • I never tried it, but I don't agree that the best stay open. Sometimes places stay open even though their food sucks (Rancho Allegre, Tutta Pasta). I'm not sure how to explain those places when there are pasta and Mexican places close by. Perhaps they own their space(s).
  • that's sad, i liked T thai taste! and somehow that horrible thai takeout place next to Medusa salon stays open. their food is vile.
  • I couldn't find a good thread to resurrect, so this will have to do.

Just home from Anthony's. Yummy yummy yummy...nom, nom, nom

Arugula salad + pie with pepperoni + half pepperoni and anchovies (him). + bottle of malbec

    yummity yum yum....
  • Felix... totally agree. I'm always so impressed with them!
  • Add Okeamos and whatever is going in to the old Bagel Delight space as more sings of resurgence. Now 7th needs some better bars.

hahahahaha...after being unable to really exercise for 8 months, I'm not feeling very "flexi" any more and was trying to come up with a new name. I think I might now be......FELIX :lol::lol:
  • T Thai was probably the best Thai in North Park Slope. Lemongrass tastes like microwaved factory food, and Mango is kinda overpriced and not too impressive.

I guess Olive Vine continues to be at the top of the 7th Ave restaurant list, but I generally prefer 5th Ave for Italian or subs or burgers. I haven't seen too many good restaurants opening up in North Park, except on 5th, Bergen, 4th, etc. Not on 7th Ave. The new restaurants on 7th seem to be in South Park.
  • Anyone know what Okeanos is going to be? It sounds Greek.
  • i'm shocked that anyone thought t thai was "the best thai in north park slope"

    the food there was TERRIBLE!

mango is very, very good food. second best thai in park slope next to song.

hell, i hate lemongrass, and i'd rather be subjected to their food than the former t thai.

they went out of business for a reason. they sucked, the place was outdated and no one went there anymore.
  • 7th avenue making a comeback. Boy that would be nice since it's just one long avenue of tumbleweeds and burned out liquor stores. Comeback? I don't understand--or is this a reference to how 5th avenue surpassed seventh for eating in recent years?
  • but nono kitchen! it's gone! remember nono? it was so delicious. that cornbread! the beignets! why, WHY, WHY?

also, amidst this 7th ave love-fest, i want to take a moment to toss some hate some hate on sette. i went there the other day and explained to the waiter that i have a life-threatening food allergy to aged cheese, which could be easily excluded from what i was ordering. the waiter didn't do anything but nod until the 4th time i asked him if he understood, at which point he heaved a great sigh of apparent annoyance and said, in heavily accented english, "yes, i understand you perfectly." ten minutes later he proceeded to bring me exactly the food to which i am allergic.

there are plenty of restaurants with wait staff who don't speak english too well; that's fine. so far none of them have killed me. when i am unsure if they understand me, i order something else or leave if necessary with apologies. it may or may not have been a language barrier. perhaps someone has put out a hit on me and has been waiting for me to come to sette. in any case, it sucked. boo. fie on sette and their malevolent and/or non-english-comprehending-and-lying-about-it wait staff.

end of tirade. may the love-fest continue....
  • Inelson~that sounds terrible! I'm glad you're still alive!
  • Aged cheese is an interesting allergy. I wonder what ingredient it could possibly be that is the actual culprit. The bacteria in it would all be dead, right?
