Free Learn to Play Hockey Program - Ages 4-8
The Greater New York City Ice Hockey League is offering a free learn to play hockey program for children age 4-8. The program is hosted at the Abe Stark Ice Rink in Coney Island (in the Cyclones parking lot, right under the Parachute Jump.) The program is entirely free, except for a $35 USA Hockey registration fee. This is the national organization that governs youth hockey in the United States, and it provides other benefits like insurance. You can check their website at usahockey.com
This is an excellent program for children who are interested in playing hockey, but are afraid of the initial investment. The children who participate in this 4 week program are provided with all equipment necessary to play hockey (from helmets to skates) to use for the duration. The equipment will be used solely by your child during the entire program. The children are taught how to skate and the fundamentals of the game.
Upon completion, graduates of the Free Learn to Skate Program can join the Initiation Program which further develops their hockey skills and skating ability. If your child hates it ... there is nothing lost. If your child loves it, you can then decide to invest in the equipment necessary to play the game.
Both of my children completed the Initiation Program with this league and they both now play travel hockey for the organization. It is an amazing non profit organization run by dedicated and loving volunteers.
The program begins on October 3, 2009.
