I know you jerks will sleep well because despite all your fake concerns for the environment and neighborhood, you really don’t care who you step on in the end. >>
I am sooo sick of hearing lines like this. Not everyone who lives and owns in this neighborhood makes over a 100k a year. My husband is not a "paper pushing" stockbroker-he is a truck driver! And, we do not make anywhere near 100K per year. We did make a wise investment years ago and bought our 3 bedroom/2 bath duplex for a steal and that is how we can afford to live in this neighborhood still. Stop grouping everybody together-it makes me sick! -

Yuppie! There I said it! The meaning hasn’t changed since 1985 and the type of people it represents since hasn’t either..Everybody I know uses the term..The media is still writing articles about yuppies and hipsters... in fact they were the ones who gave these people the label and is stuck because it’s the truth.Guest wrote: I assume that is why you live there. And for the record, a large part of SW Slope is still a little "tacky" and "trashy". However, the problem that you should be concerned about is developers building those ugly ass cheap apt buildings all over that section of PS. Now this is only happening because old timers cashed out and sold their homes to developers instead of people who would actually live there. So really, you should be mad at them.
Wrong! Real-estate developers and franchise stores study the demographics of a nab before they make these large investments. Do you actually think they would build one of these huge skyscraping luxury condos in say.. Brownsville Brooklyn? or east new York? ..um let me think. I don’t think so! the old timers would not be selling out if these developers didn’t come knocking with more money than the regular Joe looking to buy a home to raise his family in. it has become a social status thing to live in park slope. when I tell people where I live, I can’t count how many times people say "wow park slope? you must be making good money cuz I can,t afford it there" I makes me imbarased..not proud like some of you seem to be.
to those of you, who come here from other parts on this country, crying that they are not one of these blood sucking leaches called yuppies and hipsters... you say you worked hard and scrape by just to get an Apt in this nab.. and your glad to have the "opportunity" to be hear, why is this an "opportunity" ? it’s just supposed to be a place to live and call home. not the trendy country club YOU turned it into. There are other nice nabs in brooklyn that are affordable and safe..but not as flashy as “the slope†but thats not what you want.. you want status.. let’s see, if I moved to LA and im making endsmeat..do you think id move to Beverly hills? no because it’s not practical. but if I wanted to look cool and hip and be seen walking on the same street as Paris Hilton. well if I was as shallow & superficial as you mofos..i d guess id rob a bank to live there..Guest wrote: I assume that is why you live there. Thank you.. So whos making judgments now!!?? Who are you to say whats tacky and what is not. Tell me, What makes a 99 cent store tacky? 1) Is it the minorities and blue colar typs that shop there? or is it 2)the lack of "decor" and the the no name products they sell. youll have us think its 2) but it realy is 1) and you dont have the balls to say so. i live at these bargan mom and pop stores.. thanks to you, they are slowly closing..DEE&DEE for example.. well when you have to buy a bar of sope for 4.95 i hope you choke on it!

First off, let's start with the actual name of the neighborhood. Just a few years ago, about five to be exact, NO yuppie would even dare to cross 6th avenue and venture on into the unknowns of 5th avenue tand below. Yes, thats right folks, just a few years ago shit rolled down the slope and MY neighborhood was considered tacky and trashy. Now we have been declared Park Slope "south", when before yuppies did not want to extend the name outside of their sheltered realm. Well boy oh boy has that changed! Now there are discreet little bars popping up here and there, and little dinky (classy to you fools of course) cafes appearing all along 5th avenue. The part that cracks me up the most however, is that these Yuppie morons want to "gentrify" 4th avenue too. I'm sorry...what are you gentrifying? A neighborhood thats been in existence long before you decided to come from Nebraska and Wisconsin to get a cute appartment in affordable Brooklyn? Brooklyn is not even affordable anymore because of you!!! I'm tired of watching you idiots push your babies (who have the dumbest names like Cody and Dakota) around in those carriages with bicycle wheels. I am SICK of your "say no to the bush agenda signs." I am sick of your New York Times reading, latte sipping asses that parade around this goddamn neighborhood. GO BACK TO 7th AVENUE! And take your nannies and Volvos with you, you ignorant fools! This neighborhood existed before you ever set foot in this borough. Now all of a sudden you want to "culture the heathens"!?! Tough shit. This is not your neighborhood and you have no right to bring a "renaissance" to it. One last thought to add to my tirade. The one thing I love the most is seeing Yuppies in Coney Island. I love how they just lounge around eating hot dogs while they give hispanics and other minorities around them dirty looks as if they are the ones who don't belong there. ARE YOU SERIOUS? Nathans has existed since 1916, and sadly enough, you NIMBY jerks are not the ones who discovered it, though I'm sure you'd all like to think so. Let me conclude this with final thought. Brooklyn is NOT trendy, It is NOT hip, and you are NOT wanted...nor are you welcome! YUPPIES GO HOME. Your spray paint anti Bush art and 5.00 coffees are not wanted around these parts.
I think what you REALLY hate is lattes/coffee...not yuppies. -

Fuck you. I make over 100K a year, I’m not some evil person who stepped on people to get where I am today. In fact I'm quit the opposite. Unlike you I don’t stand there with my hat in my fucking hand waiting for someone to offer me an opportunity or hand out. I really hate being vilified for making six figures as if its so much money in this day and age. The fact is if you really do the math it’s not. In fact people in my income bracket get screwed the worste. No programs or subsides for me, and often the value of these subsides that are received by lower income families by far supersedes my salary. Lets look at it
Pre school for two kids is 22K, a year. Low income housing at 250k for a fine home in lieu of 950k- 2.2 Million for a home of similar size. So now I’m paying a 6 thousand dollar a month mortgage, 1835 a month for schooling, 150 a week in groceries, not to mention healthcare, home owners insurance etc. so stop acting like we’re so fucking rich The only difference between us is I pay for my own shit and my shit costs money.
there i said it. I like organic food, I like good coffeee, I like cheese and wine. I hang out in my living room with my slippers on and a smokers jacket, pipe in hand laughing at the working mans folley. gooodfrey! thank god we dont have to work for this darrrr_ling

about "their kids" comment
re: must be wealthy if you live in PS - my Barbados-born wife gets that line of questioning ALL THE TIME when "where do you live" comes up in conversation. This question represents a double-entendre for a black person!
Our rent 11 years ago was middle class and it still is today thanks to rent stabilzation. We escaped to Brooklyn because a studio in Manhattan was more than we paid for a 1 bedroom in Park Slope.
My comments always have been and always will be addressed to the nouveau riche who bring with them a sense of privilege and entitlement which, when put into practice, weakens the social fabric of our community.
I don't know what my immediate future will bring housing-wise, but if I have to abandon my apartment and my "community" due to my landlord's plan to become wealthier, it will be a major mind-fuck - despite what I see happening around me on a daily basis.
If you are very concerned personally about what's happening in Park Slope, you can become involved with organizations that care, and you can become politically active.
If all you are doing is nothing and then loudly complaining then who do you suppose is going to care about your plight? -

Hey Genius - Park Slope South is past 9th St (i.e. South of Park Slope. Below 6th avenue is sometimes referred to as the lower slope (i.e. is down the hill from the rest of PS). Clearly you've been living here awhile [sarcasm] -

You reckon that's something the landlord in this tale is trying to hide?
The reason, as I read it, was that the subject of "old-timers" in a neighborhood selling their property to "newcomers" and the effects on tenants had come up previously in the thread and so he probably considered it relevant to illustrate his point, ie, presumably longtime Hasidic property owner selling the building to developers/hipsters/Robert Pollard/other demonic interlopers - Mark kicked out, takes it like a man etc. -

The issue isnt whether the LL is trying to hide it, its that it appears Mark's gratuidous need to mention it reflects an obvious bias -

See my edit. Who knows, coulda just been for color in the story, "Yeah my landlord at the time was an evangelical/old hippie dude/federal judge/sikh/yuppie, blah blah blah" I don't feel the outrage. -

Fun thread. It's hard for me to be sympathetic to the angry troll. I didn't always have a six-figure income, and in fact grew up in poverty. Yet, somehow, I miraculously not only live in Park Slope, but own in Park Slope, and collect rent in Park Slope.
When I 1st moved to NYC back in the 80's, it felt every bit as expensive as it does today. My wife (then GF) had a dirt-cheap rent-stab'd apartment in a blue collar nabe. We saved up our money and eventually moved to an apt near PS, where the LL thank god did not raise the rent for 5 years until one day he woke up and figured out the mkt had doubled. By then we had squirreled away enough to buy an apt in PS, and that was the road leading to buying a building in PS some day.
We were not wealthy when we made our initial investment, we did not get help from our parents, nothing like that. We simply had a plan for the future that did not include mooching off rent regulation for the rest of our lives or praying that our LL would never raise the rent. Basically, our goal was to be self-sufficient. Anything less, would represent a total sense of entitlement. What angry troll doesn't get is that he is the one acting like a spoiled, self-absorbed brat.
People like this angry troll have only themselves to blame for their situation. -
