candles along one block of St. John's Place

Subject: candles along one block of St. John's Place

As I was walking along St. John's Place Saturday morning, on the block between New York and Nostrand, I noticed that a row of white candles ... the ones in tall glass jars ... had been placed lit all along the sidewalk, up against the gates of the row houses. Does anybody know if this was a memorial or had any special significance?
