The same place every immigrant comes from - a place with less opportunities than here. The Irish came after the potato famine in the 1850s, the Jews came after the pogroms in Russia in the late 1800s, the Italians came after WW1 - and so it goes.

The only issues that I have with the new immigrants is a resistance to becoming Americans and making this their home. The immigrants from years ago came here to establish roots for their families and hopefully provide a better life. They were proud to become citizens. Although their English might have been broken, they made efforts to learn it - even though speaking their native language might have been easier. They also embraced American holidays (with some adjustments - how many Italian Americans still have Lasagna AND turkey on Thanksgiving?) and American culture.

BUT - the longer the immigrants stay and have children who are born in the US, the more likely they will have to adjust. Their children will be more "Americanized" and how can the parents stop that?
