Not necessarily surprising, but disheartening nonetheless.

"Crime is down so far this year across the city, but some Brooklyn neighborhoods have seen a surge of shootings, NYPD statistics show."
I have noticed a lot of people on here stating that NYPD statistics are inaccurate, but regardless of that, this is disheartening to hear. I live in one of the discussed neighborhoods and teach in another and wish this wasn't the direction only certain neighborhoods were taking.
I know people will say "why are you surprised?" and the like, but honestly, the only fact that 100% did not surprise me was "But in Williamsburg's 90th Precinct and Bushwick's 83rd Precinct, burglaries are on the upswing. The two neighborhoods lead the city in break-ins this year. Williamsburg reported 355 this year, up from 292 in 2008 and Bushwick has had 356, up from 333." If I was one who robbed homes, I would see Williamsburg as the best bet - young people moving in with great TVs, mp3 players, DJ equipment, instruments, etc.

This is really upsetting. I love our neighborhood and will continue to do my best to give back to it.
I do encourage everyone to lock your windows and doors, and become a part of the community - vote and stay informed. It's all we can do. -
My downstairs neighbor has a big 30 something inch IMac screen chilling right by the basement window. Not to say burglary is right, but hipsters just seem to be oblivious.
