East 18th Street, Newkirk and Foster — Brooklynian

East 18th Street, Newkirk and Foster

I am looking into getting an apartment on East 18th St., Newkirk and Foster avenues. The building is amazing and I'm very happy with the apartment and the people in the place.

If anyone lives in this neighborhood, can you please let me know how safe this neighborhood is, what kind of people are around, do you feel safe living here? I did a nighttime walk to the Newkirk train station, and it seemed pretty decent. Let me know any suggestions.

By the way, I'm a white blonde girl who will be living alone, if that makes any difference.

Thank you!

  • Hey pseudo. I live a little bit northeast of that location, within a couple of blocks and closer to Cortelyou Rd. I'm part of the gentrifying horde—I've been here for about a year and I've generally found it to be very safe and pleasant.

I'm male and I've never had a lick of trouble, but my girlfriend has occasionally been verbally harrassed as she walks east from the Cortelyou Rd. station. She claims it's nothing that she wouldn't get elsewhere in New York, but still I generally go and walk with her after dark.

Long-time residents will surely know more about this than I do, but there have been a couple of news stories about gangs to the east of the neighborhood, on E. 21st St at Ditmas and on Cortelyou and Nostrand. I occassionally cycle up Bedford and take the B41 on weekends when the Q is screwy, but I wouldn't generally walk east of Ocean Ave at night.

    Hope that helps.
