Crockpot Ideas
I have a new baby crockpot (1.5qt) and made my first recipe overnight:
2 apples, sliced
1 tsp (5 mL) cinnamon
1/3 cup (75 mL) brown sugar
2 cups (500 mL) old-fashioned rolled oats
4 cups (1 L) water
pinch salt
Mix together the apples, cinnamon and brown sugar in the bottom of the crockpot. Sprinkle the oats over the apples, then pour in the water and salt. Don't stir - just leave it alone. Cook on low setting for 8 or 9 hours. Serve sprinkled with additional brown sugar, if you want, and some milk or cream.
(I cut everything but the apples in half)
Now I've got a new thing cooking:
Onions
Red potatoes
cubed ham
one can of cheddar cheese soup
We'll see what happens.
Anybody have any good recipes? (the simpler, the better)

No one loves you or your crockpot. Although it's kinda the same thing.

come on, Beave, I am sure you have a recipe for slow-cooked babies somewhere up your sleeve.

Following your potato/cheese soup recipe, I'd try this but add a veggie, onion and potatoes, maybe?

crock pots are awesome, makes me feel like a 60's housewife! -
I am no chef. I microwave those little bastards.

the hard thing about the crockpot is that my whole house is smelling delish and it's making me HONGRAY. -
I know!! Papi Chulo made some ribs in it and I kept wanting to open the lid to look in and your not supposed to! The ultimate in patience training. So are the cheesy, ham potatoes done?
I haven't made anything for dinner and Papi will be home soon. He was out helping Whynot, who just got a new big washer and dryer :alien: -
the cheesy hammed up taters are probably done. I did open and stir once. Going to eat them around 6:30. I'd invite you guys over, but then I should shower or something :-)
I took pictures of the whole thing. In case I die, it will be my legacy.
(also, I have a shit ton of laundry, so that would mean I should invite whynot too)
Somebody sent me this and I'm digging it. Chick did not know how to cook, and made a resolution to cook something in her crockpot 365 days last year. Some of the dishes sound delish - spinach/artichoke dip, philly cheese steaks, etc....but she also made shrinky dinks and soap! Plus, she takes pictures of all of the ingredients, so you know what to look for in the store.

OMG! It's deeeeee-lish. I'm glad I didn't shower because I don't feel like sharing any of it.

Her crock pot yogurt post was an amazing discovery. I made yogurt constantly for like two months after reading it. And promptly burned myself out on the stuff.

I love that she made shrinky dinks and soap too
Hey, Toadette, what's your latest crockpot dish? -
I have a pork shoulder in the fridge defrosting. If anyone has a crockpot recipe for let me know. I wish I knew how to make pulled pork in the crock.
Where's sweettea? I need a southern bell's help. -
Did you google pulled pork crockpot? I am sure I've seen it out there somewhere.

I googled Flexi Crackpot and got this thread.

I found a few, but I'm having some issues with the recipes. Some ask for onions to line the bottom of the pot. I like onions, but Papi doesn't -so that's out... then some ask for brown sugar in the rub... I've never done this and I worry it will make it sweet... I like more of a sour/tangy sauce (sweet BBQ is just not for me) ...
the search continues... -

Make sure Mama doesn't tell you a river otter is the same as a beaver.
...where is that damn thread?
Back on topic: Crockpots are for slow cooked chili. mmmmm chili. -
Sounds strange, at least I thought so, but we made our first whole chicken in a crockpot yesterday. Dry rub of choice, place the chicken on top of a few balls of aluminum foil to keep it from resting in the juices, cover, bring it up to temp on High for 30-40 minutes, let it sit on Low for 8-10 hours.

Mamacita, pulled pork is the only thing I make in a crock pot - sliced onions and garlic, cider vinegar, hot sauce (cheap vinegar kind, like Franks's Louisiana) I threw in a beer once, but it shouldn't start in much liquid -- the pork will throw off a lot of liquid as it cooks. Which it will do for 10-12 hours on low. Looooong time. Don't cook it overnight unless you want it to wake you up with the smell of awesomeness. I 'fridgerate it to pull off the abundant fat...and use that orange fat to make rice that's kinda like jambalaya.

I got the recipe from Chowhound Homecooking board. I don't remember if I put salt and pepper.
Serve on hamburger buns with coleslaw. The Associated on Fifth Ave was selling potato roll slider-sized buns this summer, which makes for perfect pulled pork party food. They may still carry them... -

Wow.
Hello there , how did that turn out?
Dammit ,now I'm hungry. #-o -
The skin was a surprise - I was thinking that it would be rubbery fatness, but it came out crisp, not like, papery-thin crisp, but crisp enough. I thought that the dark meat sections turned out nicely, but the breast meat was a little bland, for being cooked on the bone - maybe some more seasonings in the cavity or tucked under the skin. We'll definitely try it again.

^ there is a current commercial for Target and they have a big Rival crockpot in it....the woman is putting a whole turkey inside.
The trick (I have heard) to cooking big birds in a crockpot is to get an oval cooker rather than a round one - not sure if that's just for fit or if it's based on where the heating element(s) are -
It's for fit - the oval crockpots give you much more to work with.

I've only cooked whole chicken in an oven. Somebody cooking it in a crockpot is a wow for me.
Did you baste it ?
What I do:
Rub seasonings under the skin and go as far as you can reach back. Also, cut up some butter to tuck under the skin.
Rub the whole chicken down with butter then throw all the seasonings on it.
Slice a lemon in half and put it inside the cavity. -
Alright I'm going for it. The pork is basically defrosted now (it was a mighty hunk of meat). I'm making a rub for it with sea salt, cayenne, garlic powder, pepper, Worcestershire, stone ground mustard, and a little brown sugar. Then wrap it up and place back in the fridge to marinate.
Then I'm using a variation of Pitu's recipe and attempting to make a NC vinegar sauce to add when cooking. Lastly I'll line the bottom of the crockpot with garlic cloves, pasilla peppers, onion and Anaheim peppers. Only a little onion so Papi doesn't notice. (can you tell I like things spicy?)
Wish me luck!
Howdy, Stranger!
