Container Store vs IKEA vs boards and crates

I want to get one of those wall units that is flexible and easily changed, but sturdy/stable enough to hold books, a flat-panel TV, and other heavy items. At one point I had the "Skandia" from Container Store, but it was pretty expensive and is now only available by special order, which means I can't go to the store and add extra bits and pieces at will. I don't need need drawers or doors. It just needs to be sturdy, free-standing, and relatively easy to add pieces to. Nothing that needs to be bracketed to the wall, a la Container Store's "Elfa" or IKEA's cheapest and apparently most-likely-to-tip-over-and-crush-your-foot stuff.

Once upon a time I would have used boards and crates for a cheap fix, but I'd like to move away from the dorm room look and I already sleep on an air mattress (surprisingly comfortable if you get a nice one, and way cheaper, lighter, and more roll-uppable and store-in-a-closetable than another ther mattress I have met).

Any suggestions vis a vis my wall unit? To reiterate, not in priority order:

1. Freestanding
2. Easy to add stuff to
3. Not a gazillion dollars
4. Can hold heavy items

Danke.

  • Look at the stuff carried by Gothic cabinet craft; they have a website.

Or, if you can draw it I can likely build it. (but this is only a hobby and I am presently backed up on work). If you need it fast, go to Gothic.
