Abandoned (?) House on Prospect Park West/ 6th Street

Had a nice stroll around Park Slope this morning and came across an old and, what looks to be, deserted house on the corner of Prospect Park West and 6th Street. Does anyone know anything about this place?

To be honest, it looks like a textbook haunted house. The windows are a mixture of boarded up and smashed and there are (stray?) cats sitting on the window ledges. The back yard looks a mess and dirty lace curtains are hanging in the remaining, "preserved" windows.

My first thought was that the building had been deserted, but then I noticed that the porch light was on. Does anyone live there? I have to admit, I am fascinated by it.

How about you knock on the door and see if anyone answers. If they do , ask for whoever and of course you have the wrong house.

If nobody answers , climb in one of those broken windows and take a little tour. Bring some cat food with you and a camera.Feed the cats , take pics of the place and report back.

I did a bit more digging and found this on the New York Times website:

There is a dirty, huge house with broken windows on the corner of 6th Street and Prospect Park West in Brooklyn that has been boarded up for the 20 years I’ve lived on the block. If it wasn’t such a mystery, it’d be an eyesore. A neighborhood guy cuts the bushes back and feeds the stray cats in the gated yard (chain and padlock), but swears he doesn’t know who owns the house (or get paid for his tidying up). Someone once told me it belonged to Pete Hamill. The veterinarian around the corner has no idea about who the owner is, and he’s been here, living in his brownstone with his clinic downstairs, since forever. I’ve even gone as far as to look up the address on government zoning websites. Nada. Who ever does own it could get millions for it. What gives?
