shooting on Monroe and Franklin

Subject: wow...
yeah i think they're looking for the person in my building. slightly freaked out, to say the least... -
My guess is that it's somehow related to the fatal shooting of a middle aged woman that occurred last night on Clifton between Classon and Franklin.
Gothamist is actually reporting two different shootings tonight. One on Monroe at Franklin and one on Monroe at Classon.
I'm pretty sure that this is not in the 88th's jurisdiction. It seems like at least once a year there are some issues around there and they beef up the presence when it's far too late. -
Geez. Well good luck emily, keep us posted. I don't hear the helicopter anymore so I'm hoping they caught the bastard.
-
Ugh. It's back.
-
so the police dont quite know how to keep a person calm. they just started beating on my door, and when i got to it, they were just checking to make sure i was ok. i'm pretty sure someone related to the shootings does live in the building, but they said they were going to be clearing out soonish.
yeah, that shook me up a bit. christ. -
That's messed up but not all that surprising. Hope the rest of your night is far less eventful!
Gothamist is reporting a homicide at Monroe and Classon now. Despite the reports of violent crimes and homicides being down this year, it really feels like the opposite is true. Guess it could just be media reporting that has gone up in neighborhoods that previously didn't see any reporting whatsoever. -
My husband just said the same thing to me - "But shootings are down this year!" Doesn't really matter when there have been two within a few blocks of your house is two days.
The copter seems to finally be gone, now maybe the kids will be able to sleep. It sounded like it was right on top of the house. -
yeah, it looks like there was a homicide at one and just a shooting at another, at monroe. i live on madison, basically right between the two. i don't know the folks in my building, but before tonight, i would have never suspected anything from any of them.
last night, i was walking home from the g train right after what i found out was the shooting at clifton, so it's all a bit too creepy right now. -
From my (brief) experience, there are infrequent, isolated, targeted incidents in the area that are pretty extreme, the response is to have a community meeting about the event on a nearby corner, ultimately nothing gets done and then a year later there's another incident. I've experienced the local precinct's incompetence first hand and I think it'll take some substantial organizing to really push them to get some officers on foot in areas where there may be a few bad seeds. Then again, that's one of many solutions and may very well not be the best. At the least, I'd love to see them just socializing with people in the area more. They definitely should've approached you with a bit more empathy, considering the circumstance.
Sleep well everyone. -
Jeez--what a couple of days around here. That helicopter was incessant. Wonder how much that spotight beam really helps on the ground.
-
Finally, a shooting not in Crown Heights! *duck*
-
FYI--seems that the two shootings are the same one reported twice--once as shooting, once as homicide (apparently victim died?). Both have address 20 Monroe. Certainly will be more reporting in the AM.

Here's a link from the local: http://fort-greene.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/12/08/man-killed-on-monroe-street/
It's the first details I've been able to find since wondering/worrying about the helicopters overhead for 1.5 hours earlier.
I was sort of surprised that it wasn't on the 11pm news. -
Thanks for the link, Irving. I saw the Gothamist "homocide" but I didn't actually expect to see it in the television news. They are still focused on Tiger Woods: a saga I certainly don't need to know any more about.

I cannot stress enough how incredibly important it is to GET TO KNOW YOUR NEIGHBORS! Even if it's just hi and goodbye. Look them in the eye and make a connection! You never know when you may need them or them you.
This is Brooklyn, people, not Manhattan!
Howdy, Stranger!
