OK I'll respond.
I wouldn't get off there after dark
Isn't that where the cop was shot last year? -
I lived there for a few years... lots of gang violence (shootings.) Try not to hang out around there too late like past 12pm. You should be fine during the day though. Don't walk around looking scared or lost. Know where you're going and don't walk around with an iPhone. Just use common sense. In three years I only suffered several racist comments and a few fights (that were my fault do to not ignoring some punks on the block.) You shouldn't have any problems.

Subject: SAFE ENOUGH
My 21 year old daughter has been visiting friends there (on Beekman Place) for two years now and although I was filled with apprehension, she has never been bothered. So based on this evidence I would say it is safe enough. -
As long as you're not out too late at night, it's fine. I have never felt unsafe in the area around the Parkside Q but I do take cabs home after about 10:30 pm.
It's not some kind of war zone, but keep your headphones off and be street smart, like most anywhere in the city. There's always people walking around here. -

Damn, you're afraid to go outside after noon? This city may be too much for ya.

Is it really worth it? -
There was a gang murder at 2:00 in the afternoon steps from the 4th avenue/9th street F stop a few years ago. No one thinks of that as a bad neighborhood or says not to use that stop at night. If you look at crime statistics on the NY TImes websites neighborhood pages ( on real estate web page) Flatbush has waaaay less crime than the Slope.

I have lived on Ocean and Woodruff for over a year now and it's really not bad. Keep your head up and be smart while walking around.
And yes, the stats for the Slope/Prospect Heights are actually worse than around here too. -

I'm wondering if the stats are higher for Slope/Prospect Heights due to higher reportage of crime on the part of the white bourgeoisie in that area than the area around Ocean and Woodruff with a poorer AA population that realizes once they're robbed, that calling the cops won't do a thing to get their stuff back.

i'm a single white young female who lived right off of the stop 8 years ago and I still run errands throughout the neighborhood...by myself. I always felt pretty safe-stay aware, don't engage if someone gives you shit but that goes for any neighborhood. My biggest/only real fear in the neighborhood is when I'm biking flatbush - the drivers are generally asshats up and down that stretch.

i lived around there for almost a year and got off at parkside at all times of day/night. never had an issue. keep your head up, headphones off, and i think you'll be fine. like a previous poster said, it's not a warzone.
