BRIC Arts | Media| Bklyn announces its fall slate of low-cost and free media courses offered by the Brooklyn Center for Media Education (BCME) at the BCAT Media Center. Fall classes will cover subjects ranging from all aspects of television production, to computer literacy and video blogging, and basic graphic design, editing and marketing techniques. They are available to all Brooklyn residents or representatives from any Brooklyn-based organization, with tuition ranging from free to $98. Orientations for start Tuesday, January 5th.
The Brooklyn Center for Media Education at the BCAT Media Center provides Brooklyn residents with access to a variety of media services, courses and workshops, enabling them to produce their own media content and learn more about the ever-changing landscape of technology available to them today. All classes and workshops offered at the Brooklyn Center for Media education are hands-on and instructed by professionals with years of experience.
The majority of courses offered require no prior training; simply attending a free orientation is the only pre-requisite before signing up for most BCME courses. Orientations are held at the BCAT Media Center, located at 647 Fulton Street, from 6 p.m. to 8 pm. on the first Tuesday of the month, and on one Saturday a month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students are admitted on a first-come, first-served basis. Only individuals 18 years of age or older may attend BCME courses and orientations. A complete listing of classes and orientations can be found at www.bricartsmedia.org/community-media, at the “Brooklyn Center for Media Education” link.
The Basic Field Production/Non-Linear Editing Workshop covers the necessary steps of creating a video production from start to finish. Students learn to use professional digital video cameras, set up lights and sounds, and edit their pieces using Avid Xpress Pro, an editing software found in most professional production houses. The Basic Television Studio Workshop gives students hands-on experience operating studio cameras and control room equipment, and teaches the basics of floor management, directing, producing, and working with “talent.”
Once students have successfully completed either of these production workshops, they become BCAT Media Center Certified Producers and can use BRIC’s community media facilities and state-of-the-art equipment at no additional cost to produce their own 28-minute programs for the BCAT TV Network’s Brooklyn Free Speech Television programming.
In addition, BCAT Media Center Certified Producers can hone their skills with such workshops as Audio for Studio Production, Lighting for Studio Production, Basic Graphics Using Photoshop Elements and Intermediate Avid Editing. Other courses teach basic hands-on computer literacy skills, interviewing tips and techniques, and video blogging. The BCME Media Literacy Series offers classes that are free of charge and do not require attendance at orientation. Classes in this series include Citizen Journalism: The Rise of Internet Reporting, Emerging Web Technologies and Basic Marketing Techniques: From Print to Web.
