Charities Bureau Links to Rescue Group Information
I found this on Craigslist:
The status of non profits is available to the public through the links which follow. People in the Pet Community; people who foster/adopt from these groups and people who donate money to them have a right to know this information that is posted on the internet by the Attorney General's office, the IRS and Guidestar.
These are the links:
First and most important website: Attorney General's website: www.ag.ny.gov/bureaus/charities/about.html
www.charitiesnys.com
www.guidestar.com Follow the links and type in the name of the organization you're interested in. You may need to register (no charge) to use guidestar but it's worth it - you'll be able to view filed tax returns.
If you have the EIN or Federal ID number of the group or even just their zip code this additional information is useful for locating them using an "advanced search." No luck? You can call the charities bureau at
(212) 416-8401/8402 to speak directly to someone.
You can also email the charities bureau about the status of the org you want to know more about.
email: www.charitiesnys.com
www.irs.gov (www.irs.gov/app/pub-78
and a link came up with just basic information, enough to show that they are registered with the IRS.
This is usually not difficult research, you can do it on your own. The posted links are half the work!
When information is flagged on message boards about how to get that information, it may be sending up a red flag to the community.
