Hotel St George Oral History Experiment (online) — Brooklynian

Hotel St George Oral History Experiment (online)

[size=18][size=0][size=18]DO YOU LOVE BROOKLYN HISTORY?

OR IS IT NEW YORK HISTORY IN GENERAL THAT GETS YOU GOING?

A website has been created to collect the photos, clippings, and long-held secrets of the Hotel St George in Brooklyn Heights. It is generating some great stories.

Talk to your parents and grandparents--they have great stories about events that took place there and we want to hear them!!!

They have PHOTO ALBUMS and SCRAP BOOKS and we want to "sit with them" as they tell their stories! Someone will help you scan entire photo albums so your family's memories can be permanently archived on the web!

In a few clicks you can show them marvelous snapshots, gorgeous formal portraits (typically done by Nickerbocker Photo Studio on Clinton Street), charming first person memories, sensational newspaper stories and clippings, a growing collection of memorabilia, a catalog of interesting facts, a ton of fun trivia (which famous people stayed here, for instance) and a few "secret stories". The current topics being discussed:

Presidential and vice presidential visits

The 1995 Fire (one of the largest in New York history--18 alarms)

The 26th floor restaurant

And, as always, The Pool

That ought to trigger some memories! : )))

Do you or your relatives have a secret story that took place here? <winkwinkwink>

Maybe it was the war years. Did you say goodbye or hello here?

Perhaps someone you know had their wedding here. Click on the link above if you love Brooklyn history, or know someone who does.

Tell your senior family members that their entire photo albums will be scanned for them if they send an email to StGeorgeTower_photos@mac. Their memories are important history and need to be recorded...

Those who remember the St George Hotel in the 1930s, when the tower first opened, are slipping away. We want to reach out to them especially!!! Time is of the essence! Were they one of the jazz babies dancing at the open air rooftop nightclub? (AND DO THEY HAVE PHOTOS???? <LOL>)

<major>

See you there.

Best,
The Dragon Slayer

Remember, this is the link to the experiment. Bookmark it to show your grandparents the next time they are visiting:

  • THE St. George was a favorite spot for 40's actor Spencer Tracy to go on a bender, where supposedly his close friend and fellow thespian, Katherine Hepburn, would track him down and pull his drunken ass out of the bathtub where he slept, surrounded by liquor bottles.

    Some of my relatives mentioned they use to frequent the salt water pool ,which was in the basement, their only complaint was they had to wear bathing suits issued by the hotel.

    The suits were wool and probably responsible for the greatest number of cases of jock itch [ male and female ] in Brooklyn's history.
