7th Avenue Subway Mystery Stairs

I've passed through the B/Q stop at 7th Avenue twice a day for over two years and every time I wonder about the mystery staircases. I did some brief research on the history of the station and found nothing that would indicate that there was once another exit or another track.

Where do the stairs lead? Why are they locked up? Does anyone have a theory?

I know some of these old train stations actually had stations underneath them. I know Bergen Street (on the F line) does. It could also be an old connection to another train. I would be curious to know if anyone finds out.

im sure they just lead to an old, sealed entrance.

I believe there was a mezzaine up there and (possibly) another entrance from street further uphill? Or it was simply another way to move people up from platforms to the mezzaine, but you still had to enter/exit where the current token booth is. Crime was probably an issue in closing the mezz. Now used for TA storage, I believe.

I do know that if you go to the southern end (rear of Manhattan-bound, or front of Coney Island-bound) platforms you can hear and feel the air through the emergency door from the passing 2,3,4,5 trains right behind those walls.

thats the best part of the platform to stand on on hot summer days... yay breeze!

Now I have a new place to stand this summer. That platform is unbearably hot. I break out in a sweat once I come down the stairs always.

theres a door-vent that has a slit bent into it on the manhattan bound side, at the rear of the platform. when another train passes below, the breeze coming outta that slit is almost powerful enough to knock you over, heh.

HBO ran a series of short films a few years ago.. I think is was called new York Stories... And if I recall correctly they filmed one of the stories in that stair well.
