I am laughing my ass off at you Park Place. Seriously, you just don't get it. The fact that I am telling you repeatedly that I am not angry, that I have no 'rage' as you put it; but that you perceive 'rage is telling. Very telling. What you are classifying as 'rage' is commentary that you are not used to hearing. In order for my comments to make sense, you have to see them as 'hate-filled' or 'rage-filled'. You really just don't get it. And you want to know who I am? You will never know who I am. I am a proud Black man, of African descent. You would NEVER tell a Jewish person that they should see themselves simply as a person, and to abandon their Jewishness, so why are you so determined for me to abandon my Blackness? White folks like you are the real enemy. Not me. White people like you are the ones who pressured white immigrants to shorten their names and to shed their ethnic sensibility and adapt 'whiteness' as their identity. So here you are telling me to do the same thing. Get over yourself. Believe me when I say this, you are the one with the problem here. I have a great life, believe me. The arrogance of you! I pity you.

Whynot_31, unless you are female it's my understanding that it's not appropriate for me to use 'fly' to describe you. I would say a woman is fly, but I wouldn't say a man is, unless I am a gay man. 'Fly' connotes appropriate physical appreciation of someone or something. I would say, 'I saw this fly girl the other day'. I would describe you as 'cool' however. Cool can be used to connote an appreciation for another devoid of physical appreciation. 'She's cool' or 'he's cool'. Especially if I am expressing appreciation of a white person, if I say, 'he's cool' or 'she's cool' I am implying that I am accepting of that person. If I say, 'she's fly,' then I am saying she is physically attractive. I could be wrong about all of this. Besides, I think using 'fly' these days is an anachronism.

Jeffrey for the record I went to a substandard high school where Nietszche wasn't something that would ever be taught there. I discovered Nietszche when I was in college -- way before 1997. An ex-girlfriend of mine who happened to have gone to a predominantly private high school in our wonderful city turned me on to The Genealogy of Morals and I have been hooked ever since. I have dabbled in everything the man has written. Human, all to Human is an excellent book to ruminate over. I absolutely love Nietszche. I am a lover of philosophy, but it has nothing to do with high school. When I was in high school most of the teachers (WHITE teachers) wanted me to be in special education classes. This had nothing to do with the quality of my work by the way, and everything to do with what they wanted. This type of crap happens every day to Black children in this city. I had to struggle to ensure that I got into Regents classes so that I could qualify for a regents high school diploma. Most of you have no ideas what indignities Black people have to face, and get tired of hearing me talk through the prism of race. Well, I am here to tell you that the ancestors will not be silenced. This country was founded on racial oppression, it perpetuates itself on racial oppression, and sadly, i really think that this will lead to the country's end as well. I take umbrage at Park Place's attempt to flatter because 'native intelligence' just sounds crazy to me. Intelligence is nurtured, not 'natured', and I have spent a lifetime nurturing mine. I have done this because the white man can take away everything, but as of yet, the mind is still something he cannot take. I am Black, and unwaveringly proud. Power to the people ; )

So we are clearly in agreement:
I will never call you "Smart or well spoken", and you will never call me "fly".
...and to think the pessimists said we'd never get along.
And, now, for some shameless promotion of a only tangentially related thread: http://brooklynian.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=57225 -
MHA, yeah, just as a tangent, I was just baffled at why Park Place had somehow attached the year 1997 to Nietsche (guessing that's when he first studied it?) when we all know that Nietsche is by far more appropriately related to 1988:
(fair warning, some parts of the movie shown here are NSFW)
Oh and by the way...
Forget "smart" for a moment. Don't ever, ever, ever call Otto stupid.

Why is Kevin Bacon not yet registered here, when we need him.

I can't wait until the tractor vs tractor chicken scene. It'll be awesome.
I'm gonna coax a Flatbush Dollar Van driver into driving mine ....there's no way I'll lose.
...I'll ask Mrs. Whynot if she'll wear tight shorts and sing "I need a Hero" once I get home.
In order to stay on topic, I should note that Robert Moses (the nemisis of Jane Jacobs) will be brought back to life to drive the other tractor. -

Interesting to see Robert Moses name here.
Robert Moses is the reason that the Dodgers left Brooklyn in '57. Most think it was Walter O'Malley but he was just doing what business people do; maximizing profits as Ebbets Field was just too small.
Doubt me? See this link
http://www.forbes.com/2009/04/14/brooklyn-dodgers-stadium-lifestyle-sports-baseball-stadiums.html
If Robert Moses allowed O'Malley to build near Flatbush and Atlantic, the Dodgers would still be in Brooklyn. Sadly, NY lost 2 sports franchises in that same year as the NY Giants left as well. Any mayor who looses 2 professional sports franchises in the same year should be put in jail. Strange as it seems, Brooklyn has still not recovered from that loss.
What's the old joke?
You are in a bar and in comes Hitler, Mussolini, and O'Malley. You have only 2 bullets in your gun. What do you do??
You shoot O'Malley; Twice.
Sadly true but save a pistol whipping for Robert Moses -
Bump.
"Jane Addams was a leading statesperson in an era when such possibilities for women were almost nonexistent. Few people today, however, know the full scope of her work as a political progressive. Join Demos, the National Council for Research on Women, Paradigm Shift, and the Women's City Club of New York to commemorate the 150th anniversary of her birth, and to celebrate the release of Jane Addams: Spirit in Action."
