  • How do you know Winstonsmith isn't drunk, sounds like there's a need for an intervention to settle a dispute about dog owners that don't give a shit.

That the fact that the streets are littered with dog shit and will not be settled by confronting the owners , it is quite obvious that they won't comply with the existing laws .
Approach them, they will ignore you and find another block to have their precious pets leave a gift.

I'm required by law to state that i'm not drunk and question myself ,why I'm not.
  • As a dog owner, I totally agree with you about picking up after your dog and calling people out when they don't.

Isn't it ironic that those same hero's mascot is a dog?
How many people were saved using canines who can sniff them out of a collapsed building?
How many dogs are used in treatment with ill patients?

Guess all those blind people with dogs are suckers for marketing campaigns.

I am not saying you don't have a right to your opinion but dogs do play an important role in our society.
  • Canadian geese are a pest in much of the US and people spend lots of money to try to get rid of them when they stop migrating and just move into places like Prospect Park.

Speaking of original inhabitants of the constructed park, the Longmeadow used to support a flock of sheep. I doubt anybody was running around picking up after them or that they were on leashes.
While most people find a few geese acceptable, problems develop as local flocks grow. Problems include over-grazed lawns, accumulations of droppings and feathers on play areas and walkways, nutrient loading to ponds, public health concerns at beaches and drinking water supplies, aggressive behavior by nesting birds, and safety hazards near roads and airports.

  • Damn gentrifying Canadian geese!
  • Ooh, good point about drug sniffing, people saving dogs! i wonder if they poop and pee in sewers???

BTW, Winston, this has been a fun day discussing dog shit with you, and, yes, i agree, it should be picked up, that is why i do it. now, can we talk about why I keep finding condom wrappers on my street?

Do you think the dogs are f...ing on my street and then leaving their nasty condom wrappers laying around? Because personally, that concerns me more than the dog pee, but, hey , that's me!

this is a fun conversation, can we talk about it more?????

pee, pee, poop, poop, if you say it all really fast, it makes a nice little song!

Wiat, wait, wait, I wnat to get this straight, cause i have been drinking a bit. But, are you seriously saying that people get dogs because of TV ads? seriously? is that what youa re saying???/quote]
Yes, a lotta people buy a lotta things because Madison Ave wants it that way.

I am sure you love your dog (no sarcasm) but I don't hate dogs. I am just sick of living in their toilet.
  • I agree about madison Avenue, but, come on, dogs? LOL
  • hunter.gatherer wrote: [quote=StoopLady]I think many dog walkers are on their cell phones and aren't able to multitask a plastic bag in one hand, the leash in the other, talk and pick up their doggie's shit at the same time.
Oh, I don't know about that. I can pick up poop, talk on the phone, keep five dogs under control, and hook a book under my arm (that I just found on someone's stoop); all at the same time :)

And I think dogwalkers in general are probably 99th percentile in complying with this particular courtesy. When you pick up a dozen or so steaming piles of poo of various consistencies per day, you get inured to it. It's not uncommon to see two of us stop and talk, while our dogs greet each other; and each has a full, warm bag in hand. I mentioned that to a friend once and his response was classic: "You should pass the bags back and forth."

Also, the only time I'll talk to those "fundraisers" who ask me if I have a minute for the environment or gay rights or world peace, is after I've picked up some poo but before I've thrown it away. If they hold the bag for me while we talk.

Huntergatherer.. I don't know if you have human children but I can tell from your post that you would be a great parent.

Pick up the POOP and Move ON!

There are so many more important issues in caring fro animals and CHILDREN!

  • oh for pete's sake. i open a hydrant about once a week all summer long, and believe me, a little dog piss is probably the least toxic thing on it. i'm sure the paint of the hydrant is nothing fantastic, health-wise. rather than a little sterile urine, i'd worry much more about all the exhaust particles.

if i were inclined to worry about such things. which i'm not. because HOLY CRAP HOW COULD I LIVE if i really let things like that get to me? i'm going to go out on a limb and say that the kind of person who becomes a fireman is able to deal with a little bit of risk in life.

fwiw, even if you attach the hose before turning on the hydrant (recommended), your hands will get washed off immediately by the inevitable leaking at the hose contact. so i think even the OCD firemen are going to be okay.

  • oy. *sigh* against all better judgement, i feel like i should interject my pathetic 2 cents. i say this as a dog owner, a responsible one at that, that always picks up after my pooch. BUT, i still see we have not figured out where exactly dogs are “allowed” to go since fire hydrants and everywhere else other than in my apartment are off limits. believe it or not, i actually had someone tell me to stop my dog from peeing ON GARBAGE which had been piled up (outside) for collection. So, i guess peeing on garbage is no longer allowed either. lamp posts as well since it can electrocute dogs (which some people would apparently be happy about). so, again, where do they go? i have tried curbing my dog, but seeing as he almost got hit by cars three times in one week, that effort was abandoned – i guess a foot-high dog is just too “difficult” to see for many drivers. Hmmm, where else? ah, yes, i believe someone offered up the sewers? really? i know of quite a few people with female dogs who have done wonders curbing them and getting them to pee into grates and sewers. i would sincerely congratulate all those with male dogs who manage to do this. see, it’s not natural. i’m not a vet, nor do i play one on TV, but a healthy male dog NATURALLY lifts his leg to pee…he NATURALLY wants to get his pee up high because his goal is to both mark something and be sure that his scent can waft. they are hard-wired to do this. when we train dogs, we have to work within their nature – how could i get my dog to stop lifting his leg in order for him to essentially sit and pee into a sewer or grate? moreover, the sewers have large gaps that my dogs paw would get stuck in, and the grates can be painful on some dogs pawpads. So…where can he go? Well, out and about in the neighborhood…until he learns to use a toilet and flush, that is. the rain washes it away every so often and all is right in the world. The poop left behind by irresponsible dog owners IS indeed nasty, gives all dog owners a bad name, and is worth making a stink about…this pee conversation? Just ridiculous.
  • I think it might me kind of fun to figure out exactly where Winstonsmith lives and have all of the dogs pee in front of it whenever possible. Not shit, though, because that would just be mean :-)

Yes, a lotta people buy a lotta things because Madison Ave wants it that way.

i would also just like to add that ummm, didn't humans domesticate dogs? i mean, dogs have evolved to keep that close connection to humans...and we have bred them that way too. maybe we do things because of marketing, but this seems like a whole lotta' years of evolution...dogs need humans and many humans need dogs for services that they provide. our ancestors helped make this happen. maybe i'm off, but i don't think so. just a thought...

also, apologies for my lack of possessive apostrophes in my above post...just wasn't paying attention.
  • but I don't hate dogs.

    Hummm...why I can't believe you?????
Anyway, you might not like dogs but you know, you live with in a free society and have NO choice but to cope with our pets peeing in the grass/street...(not with the poop, there you are right)...Sorry. That's the way it goes. Do not except for us, dog owners, to train our dogs to pee in sewers just because you want to (I actually though you were kidding but nop, you seem to be serious about that!). Be realistic and you will be less disappointed. Be tolerant and you'll feel so much better.
BUT keep on fighting against the i-dont-pick-up-poo dog owners, much more dog owners than you think will take your side, me included.
  • Carmen wrote: Or should dogs be banned in NYC altogether?
Again, nobody is discussing this sensible idea. I would say whoever has a dog now, keep it, you get grandfathered in... but no new puppies... and let's all look forward to a virtually DOG FREE 2020.

Sometimes, I think that has already happened.
  • What ever happened to CURBING your dog?!
Have your dog do their business in the street near the fire plug, then scoop.
If my seventy year old Mother can do it, anyone can.
  • I see three solutions to the problem of stepping in dog dew:

    1) A grass roots community effort to curb the offense. I'm talking about neighborhood watches, personally confronting offenders and demanding, with the authority of of the masses, that people pick up their dogs shit.

    2) Municipal patrols: massive fine for offenders. Make it worse then carrying a gun or selling crack.

    3) be careful you don't step in poop.

I'm with you on that if nothing else. In fact my newest campaign is to dissect ads on this fantastic sit I dug up: http://adland.tv/ and critique them (and their effects) in the comments. I'm currently going through ads from almost all the Superbowls in history.

(Yes, I'm looking at old Superbowl ads at 2 in the morning. Yes, I know that's pathetic.)
