NEW Jewelry classes: Lost Wax, Stone Setting and more!
Watch our website this week - www.3rdward.com - for our newly updated full roster of spring classes. Look out especially for these new classes:
Lost Wax Casting: This 6 week intensive will have you investing, measuring, weighing and casting found objects. Then, you'll carve your own project out of wax, invest it and cast it YOURSELF - because we all know the best way to learn is by doing, not watching - in our studio using a casting kiln and a vacuum casting system.
Advanced Jewelry Workshop: Bezel Setting: This class is ideal for those with some silver smithing experience, looking to add a little flash to their work. In two sessions you'll learn how to construct a bezel setting for any small object or stone with one flat side.
Advanced Jewelry Workshop: Hollow Forms: This two session class will teach you advanced soldering techniques - like team soldering - for creating secure, sturdy hollow forms. We'll cover extruded/walled shapes and dapped forms. Hollow forms are excellent for making lightweight large jewelry or small objects, like salt and pepper shakers.
Jewelry Workshop: Precious Metal Clay: This exciting new material will allow you to model and finish an object in Precious Metal Clay, then burn out the clay in our kiln, leaving you with a smaller, finished metal object. This alchemy like process is so quick and easy you'll barely believe your eyes!
Also check out these returning favorites:
Intro to Silversmithing: Your introduction to working with sheet metal. In four weeks you'll cut, file, sand, finish and patinate sheet metal (copper, silver and brass are included). Most importantly you'll learn how to safely and effectively solder to join metals. Finally your class will vote on a more advanced metal smithing skill - like raising and forming, cold joining, chain making, enameling, stone setting or much more. Individualized designs are encouraged - no cookie cutter projects! Everyone leaves with at least one finished piece and several samples.
Enameling: In just a single session learn the basis of fusing luminous and colorful glass to metal in a red hot kiln.
Photo-etching: In just a single session learn to etch a black and white design into copper using an acid etching bath. Perfect for production jewelers looking to replicate things quickly.
Organic Sculpture: This two session workshop includes making moulds of the human form using organic, seaweed based material called alginate. In the second session carve the backbone of a cuttlefish and cast molten bronze into your mould, for an organic, elegant effect.
Plastics: This two session workshop is great for jewelers, industrial designers and sculptors who want to learn the process and safety methods for working with plastics. In session 1 you'll cast epoxy resin into provided silicon moulds, in session 2 you'll de-mould your objects and learn to fabricate in sheet acrylic using saws, files and solvents.
Please email me with any questions about these classes, or if you don't yet see them listed on the website - you can register over the phone! See our website for pricing as it varies for members vs. non-members.
ps I'm teaching a portraits class too! It's going to be so much fun...hope to see you in the studio - Max
