Franny Kudos! — Brooklynian

Franny Kudos!

I had a terrific lunch here some time ago .

This evening we took a friend out for her Birthday.

Hubbie was looking for a someplace special and suggested so we went. My lunch experience 6 months ago was lovely but I hesitated on the dinner plan. To me this was a "lite lunch" place and get in there and out while "young people are at work and too busy to enjoy a leisurely meal" kind a place.

My apologIes to EVERYONE!

It was terrific.. Excellent pizza. I grew up on DiFaro pizza (yeah I have mentioned this before) but tonight the pizza was beyond that standard of excellent. The crust was thin but so perfectly done it held in a loving embrace what was upon it. Brocoli Rabe with sausage, cabbage salad, amazing plate of "cold cuts" ( made on site), pasta was fusilli , sausage and magic seasonings. Great bottle of wine to go with all that.

Think small plate concept but every offering was so perfect that you didn't need volume ON the plate to fill your stomach and your spirit.

There was some music in the background but totally not intrusive. The level of conversation was on the loud side.. but I loved it. What is not to love about small groups of people having a good time with their friends?

The last time I ate here was with my adult son and a well behaved toddler and that was lunch. That was different crowd, different experience but still excellent food. It took a long time for a return visit but truly I was so impressed this evening!

I am interested if I just had an enchanted evening or has anyone eaten there recently who was impressed?

  • We're always impressed. We're vegetarian, and despite their reputation for house-cured meats, the menu lets us fill the table with vegetarian appetizers. And the pizzas are lovely. Tottono's and DiFaro's are treats beyond measure, but I agree that Franny's pizzas are excellent.
And... the staff are very knowledgeable about the menu but never condescending. The staff are empowered to make negative things go right. Wine recommendations are good. They are attentive to you. The room is warm and the mirrors make it a bit fun. The menu mixed drinks are inventive and excellent.
Yes, it is noisy, but as veets says above, "what is not to love...?" It's a cheerful background babble.
  • Mrs. C and I were actually there last night too. Now that Garden Cafe is gone, Franny's is without question the best restaurant in Prospect Heights (The Vanderbilt and James are very good too, but I think Franny's is better). We like the small plates and pastas even better than the pizza, so we usually only get pizza if we're there with a few people so that we can share one and still each get a pasta. The menu is constantly changing and generally reflects seasonal ingredients. Often what sounds like a very simple combination of ingredients is so amazing. The first time we went, several years ago soon after they opened, Mrs. C and I had stopped at the bar for a drink and got a small plate of cabbage, walnuts, and some type of hard cheese (possibly parmesan, but I forget at this point). It was so good, much better than I ever could have expected from the description, and we were won over immediately. Now Franny's is our go-to place in the neighborhood for a nice night out.
They also have excellent cocktails, especially for fans of interesting bitters.
  • Yes. One of my favorite restaurants in Park Slope. Love Franny's
  • Well I guess this restaurant is in Prospect Heights..Lol!
  • I know that a lot of people really love Franny's but I'm not really sure what all the fuss is about. The food is good, but it's definitely not worth the long wait that we've encountered on some evenings, and it's so very loud in there. Maybe I'm just cranky.
  • It was on the loud side but quieted down by the time we ordered. We waited less than 10 minutes for a table but it was a Wednesday nite at around 9pm. I am sure weekends are another story.

    Cute drawing!

Lets have a debate about Park Slope's borders!
  • Whatever neighborhood you want to say it is in... I still say it is a great place. The clam pizza is outrageous and the drinks are fab too.
  • been there once, and after that 2 person meal for $100, i never went back. motorino pizza trumps this place, imo.

I had a very similar conversation today about 2 people pizza, apps, 2 glasses of wine = $90 and still hungry. It's very tasty, but not a good value

I'm a fat, fat man, and I've never left Franny's hungry.

One thing that I always appreciate about Franny's is the service - every time I've been there, the servers have: known the menu inside and out, made great food and wine pairing recommendations, been attentive but not cloying... and all without a haughty attitude.
  • I agree about the lack of value. Though the food is excellent, everything at Franny's is, in my opinion, a few too dollars too expensive. Yes, I know the ingredients are top-notch, but that's not so rare these days. The prices leave a bad taste in my mouth, which is why i don't go more often.

I have only been there a few times, and don't disagree with any of what you're saying, but how much did all of that cost you ....to leave with your full belly (and you are NOT a fat, fat man.......I've seen you, you know  )
