Restaurant Vent — Brooklynian

Restaurant Vent

I need some simple advice here. I live between Fulton and Atlantic and there is a buffet restaurant that has a vent system that creates a lot of noise. I mean, it sounds like 1,000 crickets all at once for over 12 hours a day. I can't open a window in the back of the apartment because of the noise and even with all windows shut, the sound still permeates the apartment. A friend of mine, who is quite savvy with electrical devices thinks a belt may be about to go or that some kind of ball-bearing is off. I have lived in this apartment since November and the noise has just been noticeable for the past two weeks, but it is so grating.

I have walked by the place several times, hoping for an opportune time to speak to the owner or manager or something, but it is always packed and I'm not exactly sure what to say to them. I haven't called 311 yet, but have thought about it many, many times.

Any suggestions of what to do?

  • First go there and confront the owner. Let the owner know that recently his fan has been making a seriously loud noise that is getting worse for you. Tell him about your friend and then invite him over to your apartment when the noise is at its worst. (Also you should videotape it so that you have proof before they come over.) I am sure that he would like to fix his equipment before it breaks down and costs more $$ as well as keep the peace with his/her neighbors.
Make sure you let your landlord know about this and how it is affecting your quality of life. Let him know you just want him to back you up with this business and not looking to screw your landlord over.
  • do what Stacey said, but for extra points, do it immediately upon finishing a meal there.

    This allows you to:
    1. Show that you are a customer, who likes the establishment and its food(hey, even if you don't like the place, we are only talking about an investment of around $7 right?)

    2. Figure out who the owner or manager is, if you don't presently know.
  • Just went over. The manager will be back at around 7, so I'm gonna pick up a bite to eat there for din-din as well. That is an excellent idea and had thought of it as well. Good call on that one. We'll see what happens.

    Thanks.
  • Good luck.

And, I thought this thread was going to be you venting a rant about a restaurant.

    Which it was... kind of.
