Question about Prospect Park
Forgive me if this has been addressed.
When we were walking around the (hopelessly beautiful) Vale de Cashmere a few weekends back, we noticed something strange in the trees. Around the upper edge of the Vale there is a long electrical cable of somesort winding throughout the branches of the trees. It is split in some places, in others it goes on for nearly six feet. We couldnt really pinpoint where it begins or ends but were curious all the same....
any thoughts? :?:

I think a raccoon is stealing someone's cable.

Could be wires for CCTV cameras to catch guys sucking each others' wieners...

Eruv wire?
-
I've seen the wires as well, although they were on the West side of Lookout Hill. You can hike up the side of the hill and the trail there is almost as high as the wires. I couldn't figure out what they were for. Not to much wiener sucking going on around there...

That is what I thought
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eruv
A community Eruv refers to the legal aggregation or "mixture" under Jewish religious property law of separate parcels of property meeting certain requirements into a single parcel held in common by all the holders of the original parcels, which enables Jews who observe the traditional rules concerning Shabbat to carry children and belongings anywhere within the jointly held property without transgressing the prohibition against carrying a burden across a property line on the Jewish sabbath. The legal aggregation is set up to have effect on the Sabbath day only; on other days of the week, including Yom Tov (with the exception of Yom Kippur), ordinary property ownership applies. A valid aggregation has a number of requirements including an agreement among the property-holders and an aggregation ritual. -
I know exactly what new2nyc i talking about... it's not an Eruv. Those are usually cords or ribbon and along the road. (They need to be inspected regularly by the rabbi, so they wouldn't be in the woods)
It's some sort of communication or electricity type thing... It may very well just be something left over from something that's no longer there (or at least not maintained) -
Oh... here's the Park Slope Shul eruv map. http://parkslopeshul.org/?page_id=30
It goes along Flatbush Ave on that side of the map. And within the park, it goes along the Park Drive.
An eruv in Flatbush (http://www.machzikeitorah.org/feruv.gif) uses what looks like clear monofilament fishing line.... It is strung along the tops of the street lights, at least that's what the Beverley Road boundary is. -

Installed by the city, to issue fines and collect more revenue from another segment of poor people?
Or installed by specialty porn sites to collect more revenue from a (probably) largely untapped market? -

Do you think the Vale of Cashmere wiener sucker are poor? Can't afford a proper wiener sucking on their gummint check, so head to the park!

I wonder if that explains the string drifting across the road in the park that almost caused me to spin out on my bike a couple of weeks back? I assumed it was an errant kite string.

well whatever it is, i've added it to my list of suspicious things that Im convinced are the workings of bigbrother. we wondered about the CCTV but it doesnt look like there was anything ever mounted on the trees and its a little dense looking down into the vale from where the wires are. still..made me feel watched.
