My new apt... Do I live in Park Slope?
Just signed a lease to move in to my first studio apartment. Very excited :]
It's on 7th street between 3rd and 4th avenue. Technically, where the hell am I? Park Slope? Gowanus? Park Glowanuspe? It's the 11215 area code, I know that.
There's a cab company nearby on 4th ave. And a BP gas station. A spiffy-looking laundromat. Probably a deli. That's all I can think of right now.
On my block there's a few average-looking buildings (where my apt will be), one brand new luxury co-op building which really seems out of place (it has a website and info on a big billboard outside it, which I can't remember), and a big warehouse takes up several lots on the northwest part of the block, trucks going in and out. It's a pretty eclectic little place.
Any comments? Things to look forward to? Cautionary tales? Should I start packing a gat? I've been reading a lot of these posts; it's a great way to learn about what's going on in the hood.
Thanks!

If you're btw 3rd and 4th Ave, you're in Gowanus, baby! If the real estate mkt continues its insanity a bit longer, Corcoran will "annex" you into Park Slope, Red Hook, or Carroll Gardens.
-
G-Slope says Curbed.com, Gowanus says the board probs.
-
it's a cool neighborhood
i live on st. mark's between 3 + 4th avenues

On that block nothing to look forward to. Non stop traffic, do u own a car, if you do , its hard to park there because of the autoparts place DAnKan their drivers take all the spots and are very rude. So many of the neighbors cars have been hit. They like to double park there cars, alot of trucks come up the block. Besides that everthing else is alright. The laundry mat up the block it great, the Deli on 6th street and 4th is really good to eat at.
Park Slope Area -
Perhaps Gowanus Heights? My pals and I enjoy "Park Gulch" as well.

I have a studio in Gowanus, which includes both sides of 4th Ave, over to the Canal, from Carroll St down to... the BQE? To my mind, anyway.
If you are walking on level ground, it's not the slope. -

Howabout "Park Sump"? -
I lived there 27 years and always considered it the slope.

Well, here I am, 3 months later. If you want to believe the people who have been living on this block for decades, 7th street between 3rd and 4th avenue is indeed Park Slope. (Minus the yuppie density.)
I live across the street from a Chinese furniture warehouse. Two or three nights a week, at about 3AM a truck pulls up to unload/wake me up. At 9am another truck pulls up, someone starts barking orders through a loudspeaker, into the street, into my windows. Guess I don't need an alarm clock anymore!
The laundromat up the block gave my clothes to the wrong person, who took FOUR days to realize they took the wrong batch of clothes and return them to the place.
As for why it took me 3 months to get online and post again... let's just say Time Warner Cable has got another thing coming (in the form of a somewhat hilarious forum post which will make fun of their sketchy employees, but probably not adversely affect the conglomerate in any tangible way). -
Dealing with Time Warner to get my broadband a couple weeks ago was the most absurd welcome to NYC. Everyone quoted a different price and then when I wanted to sign up would only give me the higher price-$59.99!
However, persistence paid off and I was able to finally to subdue the corporate beast and get my $29.99/mo net. -
According to Wikipedia, the cutoff for Park Slope is roughly 4th Ave. I always thought of that area as the beginning of Gowanus.

Nothing west of 4th Avenue is Park Slope. Welcome to the canal!

youre in the smelly canal area. aka gowanus.

It doesn't really smell that bad here. Maybe it's the fact that you haven't taken a shower in a while. -

This is true. -
Probably not by any historical definition - here's a blurb from Wired . . .
"
The slope of Park Slope descends gradually from northeast to southwest, leading to the terminology North Slope (from Flatbush Avenue to Union Street), Center Slope (from the south side of Union Street to Fifth or Sixth Streets) and South Slope beyond that. Residents of the southeastern part of the slope, near Prospect Park Southwest, know it as Windsor Terrace.
"Originally, everything south of Ninth Street was just `South Brooklyn,' " said Billy Stephens, senior vice president in the Brooklyn office of the Corcoran Group. "In the mid-70's Park Slope went as far as 15th Street. As time went on, the whole South Slope became `Park Slope.' "
Also a blurb from Gotham Gazette
