Dear New Yorker,

Throughout our City, a number of rental buildings are undergoing or at
risk of foreclosure. Tenants who reside in these buildings often face
decreased maintenance and building disrepair.

To help address this situation and provide relief to tenants, the New
York City Council recently formed a Task Force on Financially Distressed
Rental Housing.

The task force has been working with advocates and tenants to respond to
seriously distressed buildings where conditions have gotten so bad they
threaten the welfare of tenants. They have also been working to develop
long-term solutions to this problem at the city, state and federal
levels.

Recently, Speaker Quinn and Council Member Fernando Cabrera met with
residents of a foreclosed building in the Bronx in dire need of repairs.
The building was owned by Milbank Real Estate, who has since walked away
from the building after defaulting on their mortgage. Speaker Quinn and
Council Member Cabrera have joined residents and advocates in calling on
the lender and its special servicer to invest in the building and fix
these terrible conditions. You can read more about this building and
the plight of its tenants by clicking on the links below:

No tenant should have to live in deplorable conditions because of the
unsustainable investments that someone else made, and we will continue
to do everything that we can to protect tenants and keep housing in this
city as safe as possible.

If you would like to become more involved in tenant issues, share your
ideas with us, or let us know about a tenant event in your community,
please contact Carlos Carino in the Council's Community Outreach
Division at (212) 788-9121.

Sincerely,

Christine C. Quinn
