Dear Friend of BAFN,

April ushered in lots of sweet kittens, dogs and cats. But April also brought BAFN to the brink of insolvency. Astronomical medical and boarding fees have taken a huge toll on us. We are closing our operations to new rescues until we can refund our mission.

Here are just two of five medical catastrophes from this month.

<hr> Annie On April 5, at 7 am, in Prospect Park, a three-year-old lab/border collie mix was spotted whimpering and curled up under a tree. What caught the eye of the good Samaritan who called BAFN was the short wire cord on which the poor thing was attached. The chord had painfully cut into her already badly infected skin. You see, dear Annie had severe mange that left her with painful lesions over most of her body. Rushed to the veterinarian, this poor pooch was also diagnosed with tapeworms. Louis spent 5 days on life support but will recover fully. It will take months to build up her general health, but Anny is now in recuperating beautifully in a loving and committed adoptive home. TL (Tripod Louise) Tripod is a kitty who used up the better part of her nine lives in her 7 weeks! This tiny kitty was spotted crumpled on the side of a garbage container in a Marine Park dog run. A BAFN volunteer quickly answered the call. He examined her seemingly lifeless body. Still alive, she was swooped up to the vet where she was treated for shock and anemia from flea infestation. Upon careful examination it was discovered that while she suffered no internal injuries, her right front leg had severe nerve damage. Within three days, the situation became more serious, and it was necessary to remove her leg to save her life. Louise bounced back faster than anyone expected and now lives happily with her rescuer.
